Starting Tomorrow, Expect Delays Entering & Exiting the Foothill Campus

On Wednesday, Nov. 19, the township of Los Altos begins installing median sidewalks along El Monte Road. To keep workers and drivers safe, the two lanes on El Monte Road will be reduced to a single lane. Allow yourself extra time, and expect delays entering and exiting the Foothill campus. Township officials expect this project to be completed by the end of December. Entering/exiting at the Moody Road entrance near Lot 7, near the fire station, may alleviate some congestion. We ask for your patience to ensure safety for all.

Also, a word about sharing the campus loop road with VTA busses. If you’ve followed a bus along loop road, you’ve likely noticed that the bus requires both lanes beginning at Lot 6. The driver is not being inconsiderate; the bus simply cannot negotiate the turning radius using only one lane. For safety reasons, bus drivers use both lanes to discourage cars from driving along side busses. This allows bus drivers to make the turn safely and keeps other drivers safe.

Research & Apply Early for Scholarships

This is an excellent time to research Foothill scholarships, download application materials, write your essay and request letters of recommendation. The key to earning a scholarship is reviewing each award's criteria and submitting the required essay and related forms well before the Feb. 12 deadline. Scholarships will be awarded during Spring Quarter. Review Foothill's scholarship listings. Foothill offers numerous scholarships for students of all majors and interests. You can use scholarship money to pay for books, computer gear and even to offset living expenses

Final Exams for Fall Quarter 2008

Final examinations are given in all courses except physical education activity, CNSL 50, cooperative education and tutoring courses. Final examinations normally will not be given in advance of the scheduled time. Review the Fall Quarter 2008 final exam schedule. You are responsible for taking all assigned final examinations. Failure to take the final exam will result in an F grade. If you miss a final exam for a legitimate reason, you should immediately communicate with your instructors and counselor.

The Enchanted on Stage at Foothill College

The Foothill College Theatre Arts Department presents The Enchanted, a joyous, supernatural romance, through Nov. 23 in the new Lohman Theatre at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Evening performances are Nov. 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22 at 8 p.m. Matinees are Nov. 16 and 23 at 2 p.m.

Directed by Foothill Theatre Arts Instructor Janis Bergmann, the play focuses on an adventurous young girl, who yearns to reform the world by means of the supernatural. Most of the local townspeople are tolerant of her lively, unconventional ways, but the government inspector regards her as a threat to order and security. He summons all of the authority and power of the state to rid her of her obsession. Ultimately the adventure of love entices her to choose between the world of matter and the realm of spirit, accomplishing in a split second what law, force and logic cannot.

Foothill Printmakers Exhibit New Work in Appreciation Hall

Think Ink is an exhibition of original prints created and curated by printmakers in Studio 1801 at Foothill College. The works address a wide range of contemporary issues and feelings. Print processes include intaglio, relief, screenprint, monotype, monoprint and collograph. Check out the exhibit in Appreciation Hall (Building 1500).

CreatiVision3 Exhibition

CreatiVision3, a digital photography show featuring the images of Barbara Collins, Tamara Barr and Marcia Bhide, runs through Dec. 7 in the Foothill College Photography Department Gallery in Building 6100. Bhide, Barr and Collins are all either current or former students in the college’s Photography & Digital Imaging Department. They have won numerous awards for their work and have shown extensively throughout the Bay Area. Each artist works with camera and computer to produce works that demonstrate just how far digital imaging has come in a very short time. Admission is free. Rock Band Competition Fund-Raiser

The Foothill College Microcredit Club presents its Rock Band Competition Wednesday, Nov. 19, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Campus Center Dining Hall. The winning contestant will win a $100 Best Buy gift certificate. There is a $5-fee to compete and you must sign up in advance to participate. Competition proceeds will be loaned to entrepreneurs in developing countries as they work to secure a living wage and end poverty in their communities. Free, Rapid HIV Testing to Commemorate World AIDS Day

To commemorate World AIDS Day, the Foothill Health Services Office will offer free rapid HIV testing and counseling to Foothill students Nov. 24 through Dec. 12. Campus Abroad in Ecuador Information Meeting

Foothill hosts a unique five-week campus abroad journey for Summer 2008 as students will travel to Ecuador to live, study and work with international scientists to uncover objects in ancient archeology digs, attend field trips and participate in service learning projects. Learn more about the program and meet Foothill Anthropology Instructor Sam Connell, who will lead Foothill's Ecuador program, by attending a free information session Wednesday, Dec. 3, at noon and again at 6 p.m. in Room 3103 at Foothill College. Families Can Enjoy The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe at Foothill College

The Foothill College Theatre Arts Department teams up with Peninsula Youth Theatre for an exciting production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe Dec. 4 through Dec. 7 in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College. Presented for children and their families, performances are Dec. 4 and Dec. 5 at 10:15 a.m.; Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.; and Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.

A classic story for kids and adults, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe chronicles the adventures of four siblings as they take a trip through a strange wardrobe to the magical land of Narnia, where the treacherous White Witch has cast a spell of eternal winter over the land populated by animals and mystical creatures. In a climactic struggle pitting the forces of good versus evil, the children try to fulfill the prophecy that will return Narnia to its rightful ruler, Aslan the Lion.

One Book, One College, One Community Project

Based on its on- and off-campus success, Foothill is reprising its One Book, One College, One Community Initiative that encourage students, community members, faculty and staff to read a chosen book and participate in events related to the selected work. The book selected for the 2008-2009 academic year is Not a Genuine Black Man by Bay Area author/actor/comedian Brian Copeland.

But audiences don't have to wait to pick up the book to hear from Copeland. The award-winning artist will give a one-night-only performance of Not a Genuine Black Man, his acclaimed one-man show, Friday, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College. After a smash run off-Broadway, Copeland's Not a Genuine Black Man holds the record for the longest running solo show in San Francisco history. The multi-talented comedian, writer, television host, talk radio host and commentator has basked in the glow of both public and critical acclaim for nearly a decade. His incisive, cutting-edge standup comedy material and his unique ability to hilariously cut to the heart of some of our most serious social and political problems has earned him spots as the opening act for such diverse artists as Ray Charles, Ringo Starr, James Brown, Etta James, Smokey Robinson and Aretha Franklin, among others. Not a Genuine Black Man deals with the lingering effects of Copeland's childhood spent as an African American in the then predominantly white Bay Area suburb of San Leandro. The show's themes of isolation, racial identity and redemption strike a central nerve in audiences. The San Francisco Chronicle called it, "...a bea utiful mix of wry humor and heartbreak, indignation and inspiration, a singular story of extreme isolation that speaks to anyone who's ever felt out of place."

2nd Annual Foothill Business Plan Competition

If you see yourself in a leadership role, excel in collaborative situations, have a unique business idea and want to get hands-on experience as a rainmaker in the Silicon Valley business community, get real return on your intellectual investment and compete in the second annual Foothill College Business Plan Competition. With a scholarship fund of $10,000 to share among the top five teams, awards will be presented to competitors from technology, retail, arts, sciences and service industries as well as non-profit groups. Individuals and teams of up to four members are invited to participate.

Free Emergency Contraceptives Available at On-Campus Health Center

The on-campus Health Services Office provides students with free emergency contraceptives such as the morning-after and Plan B pills. Should you ever confront a health emergency on campus, call 911 immediately. Do not call the on-campus Health Services Office. Health Services staff are not emergency responders and do not function in this role for Foothill College.
