University Transfer Day
Admissions representatives from more than 70 colleges and universities, including the University of California, California State University, private schools, and out-of-state and international institutions will meet with Foothill students at the college's annual University Transfer Day Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Campus Center Plaza. Admission is free; parking is $2. The event gives you the opportunity to meet one to one with admissions reps, and get answers to questions about financial aid, degree requirements, housing and more. Foothill hosts the annual event to showcase the variety of choices and options available as you prepare to make your transfer decisions.
Fall Plant Sale
The Foothill College Environmental Horticulture & Design Department presents its popular fall plant sale, with a spotlight on drought-tolerant and native plants, and hard-to-find greenery while supplies last. Sale proceeds benefit the department. The plant sale is Saturday, Oct. 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the on-campus nursery and greenhouse facilities adjacent to parking lots 7 and 8. Plant sale admission is free. Cash and checks are accepted; credit cards are not accepted. Bring bags and boxes to transport purchases. The sale will feature a wide selection of shrubs, perennials, bamboos, decorative grasses, ground covers and vegetables. Some trees in larger containers are available. Most plants are in four-inch pots, and one- and five-gallon containers. Plant sale patrons must purchase a campus parking permit for $2 from dispensers in student parking lots. Free Film Screening: Gasland: Can You Light Your Water on Fire?
The Foothill College Sustainable Learning Community and Foothill Center for a Sustainable Future present a free screening of the the film Gasland: Can You Light Your Water on Fire? Part mystery, part travelogue and part banjo showdown, Gasland documents a cross-country odyssey by filmmaker John Fox to find out if the controversial process of hydraulic fracturing, a form of gas drilling, is actually safe. Traveling across 24 states to interview families, EPA whistleblowers, congressmen and scientists in vast drilling areas, Fox unearths a shocking story about a practice that is understudied and inadequately regulated. Gasland races to find answers about fracking before it's too late. The film won the Special Jury Prize Documentary Award at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. 106 mins.
Foothill Food Pantry & School Supply Bank
You can help another Foothill student who's struggling to make ends meet by making a donation of basic school supplies as well as non-perishable food items to the college's School Supply Bank & Food Pantry. Drop off donations in the Student Success Center (Room 8103) or Tutorial Center (Room 3526) anytime this quarter.
The project's goal is to provide basic non-perishable food items along with basic school supplies to those students who are enrolled in at least one unit, have an OwlCard, and who express such need. There is great need for the following donation items: college-ruled paper, highlighter markers, permanent markers, pencils, pens, pocket dictionaries, notebooks, planners, canned veggies, canned meats, dry instant soups, peanut butter, apple sauce, oatmeal and other cereals, canned beans, dry pasta and pasta sauce.
The Food Pantry & School Supply Bank will then open for distribution of items in Room 8103. Students must present a valid OwlCard to participate. Distribution dates and times are:

The Foothill College Organizations Board of Directors (OBD/club government) has an average of 50 active clubs per quarter. Foothill clubs are required to have an employee advisor at all official meeting and events who oversees the club's financial account with the student activities accountant. Each club sends a student representative to the weekly required Club/OBD meetings, which are Tuesdays at noon in the Toyon Room. The OBD representative is the official voting representative for the club to the college acting as paperwork point-person and public relations officer for the club.
New Job Search Discussion Group
This fall, the Career Center debuts its new Job Search Discussion Group, which is designed to answer your questions, share information, and provide resources and feedback between students. The Career Center can help students develop a strategic job-hunting process, as well as teach you effective online job search methods, networking, informational interview strategies, and direct employer contact techniques. Book Arts Jam: 10th Anniversary of This Regional Celebration
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Book Arts Jam, which will be presented Saturday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Foothill College Campus Center. Guest Lecture Featuring Peter Drekmeier

Mr. Drekmeier will explain where the water from your tap comes from, as well as how the simple act of turning on your faucet involves thousands of workers, and critical collaborative partnerships among business, industry and government. He'll also make you ponder why you should care where your water comes from and what issues threaten this vital resource. The Tuolumne River Trust is hard at work promoting Bay Area water stewardship and teaching us about the Hetch Hetchy Water System, the animals that depend on the Tuolumne River, some of the current threats to the river, and what we all can do to conserve water. Raised in Palo Alto on Hetch Hetchy water, Drekmeier knows the Bay Area well. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1987 with a political science degree, and has been an environmental organizer ever since. In 1990, he founded Bay Area Action (now Acterra), and has coordinated two international Earth Day campaigns. A whitewater rafting guide, he has extensive experience working on land use initiatives.

The CEO of THIS, a leadership and strategy design agency headquartered in Silicon Valley, he advises senior executives and their teams for companies that include Apple, Google, Facebook, Salesforce.com, Symantec, Twitter, VMware and Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center).
He has conducted significant research in the field of collective intelligence, leadership and human systems. He is also the author of Bringing Out the Best in Your People (Harvard Business Review, May 2010) and Are You An Accidental Diminisher? (Ivey Business Journal, August 2010). Prior to this research and teaching, he worked for Heidrick & Struggles' Global Leadership Practice assessing senior executives around the world. His work included a yearlong project for Mark Hurd (then CEO of Hewlett Packard) assessing the top 300 executives at HP.
An active social innovator, he currently serves as a board member for the Washington, D.C., policy group Resolve and as a mentor with 2 Seeds, a non-profit incubator for agricultural projects in Africa. He is also a regular keynote speaker at non-profits groups, including The Kauffman Fellows, St. Jude and the Minnesota Community Education Association. Originally from London, England, he resides in Menlo Park, California, with his family. He holds a B.S. in journalism and an M.B.A. from Stanford University.

Series guest speaker Christopher Harrison, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice, and is the clinical director at the Sequoia Center, an alcohol and drug addiction treatment facility in Redwood City, CA. He previously worked at the Stanford University School of Medicine where he helped develop and deliver a smoking-cessation protocol for a National Cancer Institute-funded study of addiction on nicotine dependence in adolescents. In addition to his interest in addiction research and treatment, he is passionate about helping others explore and implement practical methods to cultivate peace and wellness in daily life.

A California-based entrepreneur, educator, designer and venture capitalist, Kelley also serves as the Donald W. Whittier professor in the Product Design Program at Stanford University, where he also established the school's Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, also known as the d.school. The institute was founded on the belief that great innovators and leaders need to be great design thinkers. The d.school is a place for Stanford students and faculty in engineering, medicine, business, the humanities and education to learn design thinking and work together to address business and social challenges in a human-centered way.
Cuba In Focus: An Exhibition by American & Cuban Photographers
Foothill College presents Cuba in Focus: An Exhibition by American & Cuban Photographers, which captures the creative spirit of Cuban culture and its allure for photographers. The American and Cuban photographs will be on display Oct. 27 through Dec. 8, at the Krause Center for Innovation (KCI) Gallery at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. An opening reception will be presented Thursday, Oct. 27, from 7 to 9 p.m., preceded by a guest lecture by Cuban photographic artist José Manuel Fors, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 1501. Admission to the gallery, lecture and reception are free; parking is $2. Purchase required parking permit at dispensers in any student lot. KCI gallery hours are Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
During two, two-week trips to Cuba led by Foothill College Photography Instructor Ron Herman, M.F.A., the American photographers, all of whom are associated with Foothill College, captured images of Cuban life. On the second trip, they had the privilege of working closely with Havana photographers. Cuba in Focus features the work of 11 American photographers in conjunction with images from seven Cuban photographers. As a special addition to the exhibit, internationally renown Cuban photographic artist José Manuel Fors will present a lecture, José Manuel Fors: Beyond the Photograph, one hour prior to the opening reception Oct. 27. Fors, who has mounted major exhibitions in Cuba, Latin America, Europe and the United States, uses photo-based imagery as a support medium for his art work. One of his installations at Cuba's National Museum of Fine Arts was created with 6,000 photographs.
American exhibitors include Katherine Bazak, Mary Bender, Harlan Crowder, Lisa D'Alessandro, Ron Herman, Bob Hills, Mary Ellen Kaschub, Robin Lockner, Laura Oliphant, Cynthia Sun and John Thacker. Cuban photographers exhibiting include Guillermo Bello, Raül Cañibano, Mario Diaz, José Manuel Fors, Eduardo Garcia, Jorge Gavilondo and Perfecto Romero.
Foothill Author Series: Pulitzer Prize Winner Jack Rakove & Revolutionaries
The Foothill Authors Series presents Jack Rakove, author of new Revolutionaries: A New History of the Invention of America Tuesday, Nov. 2, at 1:30 p.m. in the Hearthside Lounge. Authors Series books are available at the Foothill College Bookstore, and can be purchased at a 20-percent discount.
In addition to appearances on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author is the William Robertson Coe Professor of History and American Studies, and Professor of Political Science at Stanford University, where he has taught since 1980. His principal areas of research include the origins of the American Revolution and Constitution, the political practice and theory of James Madison, and the role of historical knowledge in constitutional litigation. In addition to authoring six novels, he has edited and published a number of literary pieces. In his new book, the New York Times applauds Rakove for reminding us "how lucky we are that so many of our founders had closely studied law." Fittingly, he has testified to the House of Representative Judiciary Committee hearings on the history of impeachment.

Foothill Participates in Bay Area Star Party
The Foothill College Observatory and the all-volunteer Peninsula Astronomical Society team up with the NASA Lunar Science Institute to present telescope viewing Saturday, Nov. 5, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. as part of the larger Bay Area-wide star party sponsored by the inaugural Bay Area Science Festival.
Telescope viewing at the Foothill Observatory from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The on-campus observatory will also be open. Admission is free; parking is $2. Telescopes from the Peninsula Astronomical Society will be set up in the area around the observatory, provided that the sky is clear. Regardless of sky conditions, members of the NASA Lunar Science Institute will provide handouts, display Moon rocks, and demonstrate Moon Zoo through which the public can help analyze the images coming back from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series Is On Sabbatical for 2011–2012
The Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series is on sabbatical for 2011–2012 while its venue, the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College, is being renovated. The series will return in Fall 2012, according to series founder and Foothill College Astronomy Instructor Andrew Fraknoi.
"From time to time, however, we will share other interesting opportunities to hear about developments in astronomy, so that you don't get withdrawal pains during our sabbatical year," Fraknoi said. Fraknoi has also started a Facebook page with short astronomy news items. It features the latest discoveries, spectacular new images, and even a bit about science fiction with good astronomy. Between Oct. 29 and Nov. 6, a number of institutions, including the Foothill Astronomy Program, are sponsoring a Bay Area Science Festival, with 100 events during 10 days, including a family fair at AT&T Park). On Saturday evening, Nov. 5, there will be a Bay Area wide star party with telescopes available to the public in 22 sites including Foothill College.
Buy a Learning Curve Bike Race T-Shirt
This summer, Foothill teamed up with the Los Gatos Bicycle Racing Club to host its inaugural Learning Curve circuit bike race around the campus loop road. Proceeds from the race and T-shirt sales will be used to fund a multi-use (bike and pedestrian) path from El Monte Road to the pedestrian bridge. Souvenir T-shirts, which feature a design created by the AFSC Design Center and printed by Foothill students from the Fine Arts Division, are available in the Campus Bookstore for $10.

Financial Aid Update
You can still submit your application for financial aid for the upcoming 2011–2012 academic year. Get started by completing the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov and be sure to include Foothill's school code: 001199. Once the college's Financial Aid Office receives your FAFSA information, we'll send you an e-mail with instructions to log into your student portal to view further requirements.
You can also apply for the Board of Governors Fee Waiver (BOG). The BOG application is available at www.foothill.edu/aid. If you had a BOG last term, remember that you must re-apply for the remember your previous Board of Governor's Fee Waiver (BOG) expired at the end of spring term and you must reapply for the 2011–2012 academic year. You may also complete a FAFSA to apply for a BOG.

Now Two Ways to Workout in the Foothill Lifetime Fitness & Wellness Center
The state has ruled that you may enroll in Foothill's one-unit PHED 45 course a total of six times. This course allows you to workout in the Wellness Center. But you don't need to forgo your workout if you've maxed out the number of times you have completed the course. Foothill has created a new partnership with the district's Community Education Program that will allow the Wellness Center to remain open to all. There are now two ways to continue to use the Wellness Center. You can purchase a membership through the Foothill-De Anza Community Education Program or you can enroll in the PHED 45 course. Purchase a fitness membership, online at communityeducation.fhda.edu. The membership will appear under the IMPACT Short Courses Program or call (408) 864-8817 and refer to course #204;
Registration is extremely flexible. You may enroll at anytime for current and future quarters;
Fall, Winter and Spring quarter memberships cost $60, and will be discounted automatically by $20 approximately every four weeks. Summer Session memberships cost $30; and
As a membership subscriber, you may workout whenever you please. There will be no set time or workout requirements, grades, etc.
Register for the Foothill PHED 45 Course

If you are a returning student, you may repeat the PHED 45 course for one unit (up to a total of six times);
As a student enrolled in the PHED 45 course, you are required to complete 22 hours by the end of the term. You will receive a grade for the course; and
For each visit to the Wellness Center, you must complete a minimum of 30 minutes to a maximum of 120 minutes working out. You will be required to check in and out on the center's computer.
Earn a Business Psychology Bachelor's Degree at Foothill
Thanks to a new partnership with Palo Alto University, you can earn a bachelor's degree at Foothill. The two-year completion program is offered in business psychology, and all classes meet at Foothill College. Foothill College has teamed up with Bay Area-based Zimride to give students, faculty and staff a better option for carpooling. The Foothill College-Zimride partnership is sponsored by the Associated Students of Foothill College (ASFC). Recycle Printer Cartridges at Administration Building
Recycle ink cartridges from your office and home computers on campus. Drop off empty cartridges in the recycling bin in the outdoor breezeway at Building 1900. Your cartridges will be properly recycled, and Foothill will earn credits for discount purchases of items such as the new bulletin boards now available near campus restrooms. On-Campus Garment Printing Services
Foothill now offers garment-printing services on campus. Featuring competitive pricing and promotions, the service is operated by students enrolled in Foothill graphic design courses. Foothill Garment Printing Services (FGPS) provides custom-designed and screen-printed T-shirts for clubs, organizations, teams, events and academic departments. Business transactions for the student-run business are managed at the AFSC Smart Shop and printing is done in Studio 1801, a work force education/graphic arts facility in the college's Fine Arts & Communication Division. Art/Graphic & Interactive Design Instructor Kent Manske, is the faculty advisor for FGPS. Safe Battery Disposal
The Foothill College Library now maintains a designated disposal container for dead batteries. You'll find the bright red battery disposal bucket located at the exit door closest to the circulation desk. You'll also find disposal receptacles for old cell phones, computer cables and printer cartridges. Please dispose of e-waste items properly by using these containers.
