** COIN 65 Class Cancellation **

Here is a message from Greg about tonight's class:

Hello all,

I am cancelling this evenings class on Wednesday December 6 due to the fact that I am ill. I've apparently have an intestinal type virus for the past 2-3 days and am way behind and don't think I have the energy to meet with you this evening... which I do apologize for!

Soooo, there is no class meeting this evening, Wednesday December 6.

If you need to know your grade on the homework #9 assignment for creating vertical and horizontal menus, please e-mail me and I can pass that information to you personally. Otherwise I return will those assignment next week... great work by the way, there are numerous excellent submissions here!

For homework #10, Practice with layout... upload your files to your CTIS server space and Sandi will grade them... thanks Sandi!

I am assuming that I will get better and intend to provide some materials relating to the faux column technique described in chapter 6 of the textbook.

I am hoping that by Friday of this week I will have some materials that augment the faux-column technique, and something that you __might__ use in your final project in terms of layout. I intend on providing some materials for faux-column techniques for simple 2 and 3 column techniques as well as what the author has provided in chapter 6 for a flexible center-column fluid layout using the faux-column technique.

I will see you next week when we will explore everyone's final project demonstrations.

I will create a separate page to everyone's final projects which will be linked to from our COIN 65 assignments page.

Got questions, please post in the forum, or e-mail me directly.

California Community Colleges Announce Enrollment Fee Reduction

The California Community Colleges recently announced the reduction of community college enrollment fees. Enrollment fees will decrease from $17 per unit to $13 per unit for California residents at Foothill and De Anza colleges, effective Jan. 1, 2007. The California Community Colleges system provides educational, career training and university transfer programs to more than 2.5 million students annually.

Review Your Student Identification Number (SID)

Before Winter Quarter registration gets under way, be certain to review your Student Identification Number (SID). Your SID is an eight-digit, system-generated number that can be used in place of your nine-digit number, which usually has been your Social Security number. Your SID will be used throughout the Foothill and De Anza student information system.

By using your SID, you're helping Foothill-De Anza prevent identity theft. A new state law requires that schools not use student Social Security numbers unless absolutely necessary, as in the case of financial aid or student employment.

If you are a new student, you must enter a nine-digit ID when you apply for admission. The SID is generated after you submit your application. If you are a continuing or former student at Foothill or De Anza, an SID has been automatically assigned to you.

You can use either your SID or Social Security number to conduct most of your college business with Foothill College and De Anza College. We encourage you to use your SID along with your personal identification number to conduct college transactions, including registration, fee payment, transcript requests, and many other college services that require identification.

To review your SID, follow these steps:

  • Access www.foothill.edu/reg/stepschk.html;
  • Select Enter Registration System;
  • Select Foothill Registration System;
  • Submit the appropriate login information;
  • You will be directed to the Main Menu;
  • Select Student ID Lookup;
  • Your eight-digit SID will be displayed; and
  • Write down your SID and store it in a safe place. Because your records can be accessed with your SID, you should treat your SID as you would any other important identification. Do not share your SID with anyone.

If you already have a nine-digit identification number issued to you by Foothill or De Anza college, you may use that number to complete the application process. After you submit your application, an SID will be assigned to you.

Skip the Long Line: Buy Your Parking Permit Online

Just in time for Winter Quarter online registration, Foothill now offers you a new, more convenient method to purchase campus parking permits. When you register online beginning next month, you’ll have the option of purchasing a parking permit online. When you select this method, you can immediately print out a short-term, temporary permit to display in your car that must be replaced by a permanent cling permit that will be mailed to the address you specify. You’ll be charged a service fee when selecting the immediate permit option. Look for the buy-parking-permit-online option when you register for Winter Quarter Dec. 4 through Jan. 7.

Skip the Long Line; Students Can Buy Parking Permits Online

Just in time for Winter Quarter online registration, Foothill now offers students a new, more convenient method to purchase campus parking permits. When students register online, they have the option of purchasing a parking permit online. When they select this method, they can immediately print out a short-term temporary permit to display in the car that must be replaced by a permanent cling permit that will then be mailed to the address they specify. They will be charged a service fee when selecting the immediate permit option. Look for the buy-parking-permit-online option when registering for winter classes Dec. 4 through Jan. 7.

The Two Gentlemen of Verona On Stage

A nerdy knight, several outlaws, a girl disguised as a boy, and a dog named Crab—mix it all together with some 1970’s color and perspective, and the result is the Foothill College Drama Department production of The Two Gentlemen of Verona. The show runs Nov. 3 through Nov. 18 in the Playhouse Theater (Room 1301) at Foothill College. Evening performances are Nov. 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18 at 8 p.m. An afternoon matinee is Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m.

This refreshingly updated version of Shakespeare's most endearing romantic comedy spotlights the timeless tale of friendship, betrayal and love. Audiences watch as Valentine leaves his home and his best friend, Proteus, in search of adventure in a far away city. Proteus prefers to remain at home close to his love, Julia, but is soon sent away by his father to follow in Valentine’s footsteps. In the city both friends fall in love with Silvia who is betrothed to yet another suitor. Youthful affection is the main culprit as complications abound and love triangles multiply.

Tickets are $16, general; $12, students and seniors; and $8 with Foothill OwlCard. Ticket sales begin Oct. 20. Tickets will also be sold at the door. Ticket price includes parking in Lots 1 or 6 only. Lot 6 provides no-stair access to the theater. To purchase tickets or for more information, access www.foothill.edu/fa/ or call the Foothill Box Office at (650) 949-7360.

NASA Astronomer to Discuss Planet Pluto: Maligned But Not Forgotten

NASA Ames Research Center Astronomer Dale Cruikshank will present Planet Pluto: Maligned But Not Forgotten, an illustrated, non-technical talk, Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Smithwick Theater at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Admission is free and the public is invited. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Arrive early to locate parking. Visitors must purchase a campus parking permit for $2 (eight quarters). Parking lots 1, 3, 5 and 6 provide access to the theater. Call (650) 949-7888.

Although Pluto is only one of many worlds beyond Neptune that are now recognized as dwarf planets, it is the one we know best. And to generations of Americans who in their youth learned about Pluto's discovery by a Kansas farm boy in 1930, it is perhaps the one that is most loved. With a thin atmosphere, a layer of smog, three moons, and a patchy surface made of many kinds of ice, Pluto is the gateway to the vast outer fringe of the Solar System, where trillions of lumps of ice, rock, and organic chemicals orbit the Sun in a permanent deep freeze. Recognizing Pluto’s importance to our understanding of the outer regions of the Solar System, NASA launched the New Horizons spacecraft in January 2006. Streaking outward at nearly 70,000 miles per hour, New Horizons will reach Pluto in July 2015. The knowledge gained from this first close-up inspection of Pluto and its moons will expand our understanding of all the dwarf planets beyond Neptune. This new understanding will be all the more important as the completion of new and powerful survey telescopes begins to accelerate the discovery of new objects out there. Cruikshank is one of the world’s foremost authorities on the outer solar system. He and his colleagues discovered the ices that make up Pluto’s surface and evaporate to form its thin atmosphere. As a former amateur astronomer, he has a knack for explaining scientific ideas in simple, direct language. The lecture is presented as part of the eighth annual Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series sponsored by Foothill College, NASA Ames Research Center, SETI Institute and Astronomical Society of the Pacific.

The quiz only takes 20 minutes, so don't stress too much!! Read the directions carefully so you know what you are doing and then follow them! And remember the first rule of the class - remain calm at all times!! ;-)

COIN 70a

Don't forget your practice quiz. Sometime between Friday, Oct. 6 at 8:00 am and Saturday, Oct. 7 at 10:00 pm log on to EtudesNG and choose Tests and Quizzes and then choose JavaScript Quiz One (practice). You will have 20 minutes to answer the multiple choice, t/f, short answer questions. There will be a colored bar at the top of the test that shows you how much time you have left (which you can hide or show - I'd suggest you leave it there - especially on the "real" tests!). If you go over the time limit, your test will be automatically submitted. In this quiz, it doesn't matter because you can take it as many times as you like until you feel comfortable with the Etudes NG testing environment!! I will also create a new post in your Forum to discuss the quiz experience.

Good luck to all!!

Legal Precedent Set for Web Accessibility

Advocates for the disabled won a major victory yesterday, when a federal judge in California ruled that the ADA applies to the Internet. Specifically, to Internet retailers. The National Federation of the Blind brought the suit against Target, whose online store has serious obstacles for disabled, particularly vision impaired, users. This is a major ruling on the ADA, and will have serious ramifications throughout the Web. But it's critical to making the enormous potential of the Web accessible to everyone.

Fighting for Net Neutrality and Internet Freedom

Net Neutrality Update: The Pounding Before the Recess

...from the political blog mydd.com

An awesome new site just launched, called WeAretheWeb.org The site is a collection of a group of internet celebrities (like the Tron Guy) talking about net neutrality.

Here's the deal. Ted Stevens wants his bill, and he's pushing like crazy to get it. It's going to be very hard for him to lobby Senators during the August recess, so he's looking to sign up 60 Senators who will commit to cloture during the lame duck session before the recess starts. In case you're wondering, that's unusual and somewhat sleazy.

The August recess starts Thursday, so we've got to put some heat on wavering Senators to make sure they don't commit to Stevens.

If you want to help or find out more, click the links above! Don't allow internet service providers to play favorites among different Web sites! For more information about net neutrality see the FAQ at SavetheInternet.com.

Could a 15-Year-Old With a Laptop Be the New Campaign Media Guru?

Read about how a convention of political bloggers and a 15 year old are ushering in the debut of "Internet-powered politics".

"Daily Kos's convention — the in-person gathering of the nation's most-read online political blog — was practically carpeted with presidential candidates. But perhaps the most notable presentation came from Ava Lowery, a 15-year-old from rural Alabama, whose homemade video was shown at the convention on jumbo television screens. "

Friday Mourning Dove Blogging

A mourning dove couple has taken up residence on our deck and built (not much of a) nest in one of my hanging baskets. One egg is inside and they have been sitting on the egg for a little over a week. We have found out that it takes about 14 days for the eggs to incubate and then another 14 or so days for the babies to grow up and fly away.

We're looking forward to the hatching of our first grand-bird!

Emerging Technologies Workshop

Sponsored by WOW (www.WebProfessionals.com) and Foothill and De Anza College
April 21st and 22nd @ De Anza College Campus

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) is creating a huge "buzz" in the Web development community who see it as one of the new technologies ushering in "Web 2.0." AJAX provides a powerful mechanism for building Web applications and interfaces with very rich and efficient browser/client-side interactivity. This new level of interactivity is accomplished with server requests only for the portions of a Web page that are active instead of requests for an entire page. The key components of AJAX include the JavaScript DOM (Document Object Model), the XMLHttpRequest object, XML, and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).

This two-day workshop will provide attendees with a comprehensive overview of the technologies behind the AJAX platform. Upon completion, attendees should be able to immediately begin to use AJAX to build highly interactive Web applications and dynamic content.

  • An Introduction to the AJAX Platform
  • Using XMLHttpRequest to Load XML Content
  • Interactions between JavaScript and the XML Document Object Model (DOM)
  • The Role of XSLT in AJAX Applications
  • Testing AJAX Applications

Internships being offered to students of Foothill and De Anza Colleges. For information on internships, contact Marie Taylor-Harper
