Spring Registration Starts Soon; Plan to Register Early for Best Course Selection

Spring registration starts soon. Be sure to register early for best course selection. Spring classes begin April 9 and run through June 29, unless otherwise noted in the Schedule of Classes. Foothill's online class schedule is the very best way to review the most up-to-date course listings for upcoming quarters. Review the Spring Quarter online class schedule .
Continuing students—those students who were enrolled in winter classes at Foothill—can register online or by phone for Spring Quarter March 12 through April 8.

Foothill Celebrates Black History Month

Students, faculty, staff and community leaders have created an exciting calendar of cultural enrichment activities to commemorate Black History Month at Foothill throughout February. Foothill Music Theatre Stages Pippin

Foothill Music Theatre (FMT) presents Pippin through March 11 in the Foothill Playhouse. Stephen Schwartz, the award-winning composer of Wicked and Godspell, with the legendary Bob Fosse, created one of Broadway's most unique and memorable works in Pippin.

Evening performances are Feb. 22, 23 and 24, March 1, 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10 at 8 p.m. Matinees are Feb. 25 and March 4, 10 and 11 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $24, general; $22, seniors over age 65; $16, students; $10, children under age 12. Mindfulness & Depression Seminar

The Foothill Health Center and the college’s Association of Pre-Professional Students in Health Care will present a health seminar Feb. 28 from noon to 2 p.m. in Room 3401 featuring Ronna Kabatznick, Ph.D., who will discuss Mindfulness & Depression. Admission is free.

This two-hour session is designed to help you recognize the signs of depression, help you learn some specific tools for dealing with depression and teach you ways to reach out to someone who is depressed.

Kabatznick is a social psychologist and meditation teacher. She is a consultant to the UCSF Psychiatry Department, where she is involved in a research study involving mindfulness and emotional eating. For more information, access Foothill's Health Center or www.fappshc.com .

Astronaut/Scientist Janice Voss Speaks at Next Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series Presentation

As part of the Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series, Astronaut/Scientist Janice Voss of the NASA Ames Research Center will present Searching for Earth-like Planets: NASA's Kepler Mission Wednesday, March 7, at 7 p.m. in the Smithwick Theater at Foothill College. Admission is free.

The more than 200 planets discovered around other stars so far are all Jupiter-like planets, big and most likely made of gases and liquids. Astronomers are eager to refine their search to identify smaller solid planets, resembling our own Earth. In November, 2008, NASA is scheduled to launch the Kepler Mission, to search for Earth-like planets around distant stars. Dr. Voss, who is the science director for the project, will describe the design and expected results from the four-year mission.

Dr. Voss has advanced degrees in electrical engineering and aeronautics/astronautics, and has done research in space physics. She became an astronaut in 1991, and has been a mission specialist on five space flights. She has logged more than 49 days in space, traveling 18.8 million miles in 779 Earth orbits.

As part of the evening, she will also discuss her experiences as a scientist in space and her perspective on the space program. She will take questions from the audience at the end of the talk.

The lecture is co-sponsored by the Foothill College Astronomy Program, NASA Ames Research Center, SETI Institute and Astronomical Society of the Pacific. For more information, call (650) 949-7888.

Foothill Music Theatre Announces Open Auditions for Carousel

Award-winning Foothill Music Theatre announces open auditions for Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel. Auditions are Saturday, March 10, from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.; and Monday, March 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Smithwick Theater at Foothill College. No appointment is necessary.

All roles are open and strong singers, dancers and actors are needed for this large cast. Performers should prepare an up-tempo or ballad Broadway song and bring sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist is provided. The production is not for pay although two Equity Guest Artist contracts are possible.

Rehearsals for FMT's production of Carousel begin June 4. The show runs July 27 through Aug. 19. The show is directed by FMT founder/artistic director Jay Manley with musical direction by Catherine Snider and choreography by Tyler Risk.

March 15 Is Deadline to Submit Application for Foothill Scholarships


The deadline to submit all required materials for scholarships awarded by Foothill College is March 15 at 3 p.m. Application materials may include specific forms, personal essay and letter(s) of recommendation, unless otherwise noted. Review and download scholarship information packets and forms . Completed application materials must be submitted to the Foothill Financial Aid Office in Room 1930. Late submissions will not be considered.

Scholarship recipients will be notified by the Foothill Financial Aid Office. Students who receive scholarships and the generous donors who make these scholarships possible will be celebrated at the annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony May 23.

Silicon Valley Symphony Poulenc & Pipes Concert


The Silicon Valley Symphony , under the baton of conductor Michael Gibson, presents Poulenc & Pipes Saturday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m. at Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos, 16575 Shannon Road in Los Gatos. Foothill’s Version of American Idol Sets Auditions

One-Act Play Festival Spotlights Dates & Nuts

The Foothill Theatre Conservatory presents Dates & Nuts, annual one-act play festival which showcases five vignettes about dating in modern times. Based on Collective Dating by V. B. Leghorn, the show runs April 13 through April 22 in the Foothill College Playhouse (Room 1301).

Evening performances are April 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. A matinee is set for Sunday, April 22, at 2 p.m.

The Foothill Library recently added a number of new online databases for use by students, faculty and staff. Learn more by reviewing the library's online Web page . ** COIN 61-7W Midterm this Weekend **

The COIN 61 Midterm Parts I and II will be available beginning Friday, Feb. 16th, at 8:00 AM PT through Sunday, Feb. 18th at 10:00 PM PT

Because of a planned network outage this weekend, I have changed the length of your midterm exam. Originally, the exam was schedule to begin this Friday at 8:00 am and go through Saturday evening at 10:00pm.

However, on Friday February 16, 2007 starting at 11 PM there will be a network outage on both Foothill and De Anza campuses including the District offices. All District computing services will be unavailable from On-Campus and Off-Campus during the outage. The total outage may be up to 8 hours.

For that reason, I have lengthened the window of the midterm so that it will last until Sunday evening at 10:00 pm. Please do NOT plan on taking the test between the hours of 11:00 pm Friday evening through 8:00 am Saturday morning.

** More Outage Info **

CCCSAT Outage

The CCCSAT streaming server that hosts all the RealAudio materials for my classes (COIN 63 Week 1 Web Site Building audios, etc.) will be unavailable beginning Thursday, February 15th at 3:00pm for maintenance and upgrades to its servers. This will require the CCCSAT Streaming Host Server to be taken off-line. As a result, access to and from cccsatvideo.palomar.edu will not be possible from Thursday, February 15th at 3pm until Tuesday, February 20th at 5pm.

All of your regular class materials will still be available, however, if you click a link to a RealAudio file, it will not load during this time period.
