New Telescope Is the Star of Renovated Foothill College Observatory: Free Grand Re-Opening Festivities April 21
Foothill College will host the re-opening of its observatory Saturday, April 21, from 8 to 11 p.m. in Parking Lot 4, adjacent to the Krause Center for Innovation. Speaker remarks will be presented at 8:45 p.m. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. Peninsula families can look through the facility's new telescope and observe the night sky through additional telescopes that will be provided by the Peninsula Astronomical Society (PAS), the local amateur astronomy club that operates the observatory for the college.
On the night of the re-opening festivities—which falls on National Astronomy Day—PAS members will sponsor a star party that features smaller telescopes set up outside the observatory to supplement the bigger instrument inside. As darkness descends, the telescopes will be pointed at Saturn, Venus and deep sky objects beyond our solar system.
Dress warmly. Pets are not permitted at the event. Expect some waiting time to access the various telescopes. To preserve observers' night vision, be certain to dim car lights when entering parking lots. Parking in Lot 4 will be limited, so drivers should park in Lots 3 or 5 then walk to the observatory and star party in Lot 4.
The Foothill College Observatory has been an astronomical landmark and fixture in Silicon Valley's science education scene since its opening in the mid-1960s. Recently, Rob Ferber, of Hillsborough, donated a modern, 16-inch computer-automated telescope to the college observatory, which will allow better sky images, permit a larger number of people to use the observatory, and provide quicker movement of the telescope between different objects in the sky. Foothill also purchased a new high-capability telescope for safely observing the Sun during the day.
PAS members and other interested contributors will donate additional equipment to the observatory, including a video monitor to display objects that the telescope is observing for those who can't climb the stairway to the telescope mount.
After the re-opening event, the observatory is open to the public for night sky viewing on clear Friday evenings from 9 to 11 p.m. as well as for solar observing on clear Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon.
Visitors must purchase a required parking permit for $2 (eight quarters). For more information, call (650) 949-7334 or access www.foothill.edu.

Pacific Graduate School of Psychology
The Pacific Graduate School of Psychology (PGSP), one of the nation's oldest professional schools of psychology, has created a partnership with Foothill and De Anza colleges to provide students with a two-year bachelor of science degree completion program in psychology and social action at De Anza College in Cupertino. The program is designed for community college students who have completed associate degree requirements or its equivalent, and who intend to transfer to a bachelor's program.
The P3 Program (Psychology, Passion & Promise) consists of 90-unit hours of upper-level coursework in psychology complemented by courses in biology, sociology, anthropology and philosophy. In the second year of the program, along with their coursework, students complete a yearlong internship in an organization or agency, allowing them to apply the theories they have learned in class. Throughout the program, which is small and allows a great deal of personal contact with highly qualified faculty, students will be mentored by a graduate student, who will be available to help with coursework and their personal and professional development.
The goal of the P3 Program is to produce graduates who have a sound theoretical knowledge of the sciences of human behavior and the capacity to apply this knowledge and become effective agents of social change, prepared for positions of responsibility in social agencies, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, the mental health fields and in the private sector. The program is also an excellent preparation for graduate study in psychology or related fields, and students who successfully complete the program are guaranteed admission into the doctoral program in clinical psychology at PGSP.
Starting in the Fall 2007, PGSP and Foothill College have created a special scholarship for students matriculating from the Foothill–De Anza District. This scholarship consists of a 50-percent reduction in the tuition and fees for the P3 Program.
Learn more about the this exciting new degree completion program and about the Foothill-De Anza scholarships at p3.pgsp.edu and register for an upcoming information session. Students who attend an information session will have their application fees waived.
