** News for Foothill Students **

Winter Quarter Registration Is Nov. 29–Jan. 2

Foothill College can help you earn a specialized certificate, associate degree or upgrade your current job skills. We can also help you complete the general education course requirements you need to transfer to a four-year university. Working professionals and career-changing adults are also invited to attend our free Evening University Transfer Fair Thursday, Dec. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Winter Quarter classes begin the week of Jan. 3 and continue through March 25, unless otherwise listed in the online class schedule. Continuing students (those who were enrolled in Foothill or De Anza college classes during Fall Quarter) register Nov. 29–Jan. 2 using their myportal.fhda.edu accounts. New and former students register Dec. 7–Jan. 2 after submitting the college's online Application for Admission and creating a myportal.fhda.edu account. There is no fee to apply.

You can apply for admission, register for classes, pay enrollment fees and buy a parking permit online at myportal.fhda.edu. You can also review the online class schedule, and purchase, download or rent textbooks online at www.foothill.edu. California residents pay $17 per unit plus basic fees for Foothill classes. A full range of student support services is also available, including financial aid, academic co unseling, child care (at Foothill's sister school, De Anza College, in Cupertino) and tutoring. Winter Schedule Won't Be Mailed; Use Online Schedule

To provide you with convenient access to more accurate, up-to-date information, and to maximize financial resources, Foothill College updates its Winter Quarter 2011 online schedule nightly, and we've published a pdf version of the winter schedule should you want to print some or all of its pages (course listings in the pdf version are accurate as of Oct. 22). The college no longer prints a class schedule, so it's smart to always access the online schedule for the most accurate, current course listings.

Cuba: From Inside and Out Photo Exhibit

Students from the U.S. and Cuba have teamed up to present Cuba: From Inside and Out: An Exhibition by American & Cuban Photographers, a unique collaboration between 18 Foothill College student photographers and 18 Cuban photographers. The joint exhibition is on display now through Dec. 6 in the gallery at the Krause Center for Innovation (KCI) at Foothill College.

In September, 18 U.S. photographers, led by Foothill College Photography Instructor Ron Herman, M.F.A., traveled to Cuba to participate in a research and cultural exchange program (organized by Global Exchange) that brought photographers from both countries together. At Herman's invitation, 18 Havana-based photographers submitted work to be included in the exhibit. These photographs are shown as projected images to complement the wall-hung photographs taken by the Foothill student photographers.

"This joint exhibition is just one of the many activities we participated in and shared with our Cuban counterparts," Herman said. "In Cuba, we lectured, reviewed portfolios and exhibited work. These activities played a vital role in bringing our two photo communities together to exchange ideas and information. Cuba: From Inside and Out is just one link in the chain that connects American and Cuban photographers, and I hope we'll see more creative collaborations in the future."

"Being an American photographer in Cuba was an extraordinary experience on both a professional and personal level," said student and exhibit curator John Thacker. "The images we have on exhibit are very strong and my challenge as curator of the American photographs was to select and arrange them in a way that can best convey our—the outsider—vision of 'inner' Cuba."

The Foothill College exhibitors include Sharon Beach, Alejandra Chaverri, Barbara Buchholz Collins, Michael Collins, Harlan Crowder, Corinne DeBra, Matt Drown, Ron Herman, Susan Kanda, Mary Ellen Kaschub, Jan Laskowski, Sofia Milner Laskowski, Neeley Main, Susan Neville, Laura Oliphant, Bill Scull, Cynthia Sun and John Thacker. Photographers exhibiting from Cuba are Liudmila Velasco and Nelson Ramírez de Arellano, Alejandro González Méndez, Adrián Fernández Milanés, Mabel Llevat Soy, Guillermo Bello, Mario Diaz, Gonzalo Gonzalez Borges, Raül Cañibano Ercilla, Arien Chang Castan, Alex Castro, Jorge Gavilondo, Julio Larramendi, Perfecto Romero, Leysis Quesada Vera, José A. Figueroa, Manuel Piña, Ramòn M. Grandal and Lissette Solorzano.

While in Havana, the Foothill students also mounted Postcards from California, a photography exhibit, at the El Portal del Santo Angel Gallery in Havana Vieja and hosted a reception for Havana-based Cuban photographers. The collection was then gifted to the Fototeca de Cuba in Havana.

Gallery admission is free. The gallery is located on the lower level of the KCI. Exhibit hours are Mondays through Fridays, 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Parking lot 4 provides easy access to the gallery. Visitors must purchase the required parking permit for $2 from dispensers in any student lot. Foothill College is located off I-280 on El Monte Road in Los Altos Hills. For additional information, access www.foothill.edu, e-mail HermanRon@foothill.edu or call (650) 949-7082.

Destination (un)Known: American Travel Photographers
Destination (un)Known: An Exhibition of American Travel Photographers, which showcases works by nine local artists who are also Foothill students, is on display now through Dec. 6 in the Photography Department Gallery in Room 6104 at Foothill College. The opening reception for the exhibit is Thursday, Nov. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The exhibit features works by students enrolled in Foothill's PHOT 68F: Exhibition Topics in Photography course. The show includes works by Valerie Feria-Isacks, Mishka Fox, Robert Gridley, Rafael Hernandez, May Kovalick, David Lee Milgram, Dena Mossar, Helen Tindall and Heather T. Williams.

Travel photography is different from taking snapshots on vacation. It's a planned, intentional activity, and as a fine art, it confronts and absorbs aspects of other places and different people that challenge our expectations. Each of the photographers in this exhibition brought with them a set of expectations of how they intended to capture the images that attracted them. But not until the photographers finally saw the people and places of their travels were they forced to challenge their assumptions. This experience then forced a synthesized response, melding the known with the new. In this way, the photographic expressions represent both the known and the unknown.

Gallery admission is free. Exhibit hours are Mondays, 1 to 7 p.m.; Tuesdays, 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m.; Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.; Thursdays, 1 to 7 p.m.; and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Parking lots 6 and 8 provide easy access to the gallery.

Film Screening: Food, Inc.
The Foothill Sustainable Learning Community presents a screening of Food, Inc., Wednesday, Nov. 10, at noon in the Hearthside Lounge (Room 2313). Admission is free and complimentary snacks will be provided. This event is co-hosted by ASFC, Student Activities Office, Sustainability Committee, Foothill Bookstore and KJ's Cafe.

Learn how our nation's food supply is controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. Food, Inc. reveals surprising–and often shocking truths–about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation, and where we are going from here.

The Foothill Sustainable Learning Community is a special project that has been undertaken by Foothill faculty, staff and administrators to help build sustainable themes into the general curriculum at Foothill College. The Fall Quarter theme is food, and topics taught in classrooms across the campus include theme-related subjects, including organics, food production, eating locally, the slow food movement and world hunger. A number of co-curricular large and small group activities have been arranged to enhance the learning taking place in the classroom. These film screenings are a part of that project. For more information, call (650) 949-7408 or e-mail CaseyMia@foothill.edu.

Visiting Artist: Juan Santiago
Visiting ceramics artist Juan Santiago will present a demonstration and lecture featuring slides of his work Thursday, Nov. 11, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Ceramics Lab (Room 1803). After earning his graduate degree, he continued his studio practice in Bangkok, Thailand, where he lived for two years. Catching Shadows: Kepler's Search for New Worlds
As part of the Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series, astronomer Natalie Batalha, from San Jose State University and the Kepler Mission, will present Catching Shadows: Kepler's Search for New Worlds, an illustrated, non-technical talk, Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College. Admission is free; parking is $2.

Humanity's quest to learn about the existence of other worlds like our own made a huge step forward with the launch of NASA's Kepler spacecraft in March 2009. The ongoing mission is designed to survey a slice of the Milky Way Galaxy to identify planets orbiting other stars. Kepler has the advantage that it can find planets as small as Earth in or near the habitable zone of each star. It will help us determine if such planets are abundant in our galaxy. Dr. Batalha will describe the techniques used by the Kepler team to identify Earth-size planets and share some of the mission discoveries to date.

Batalha is a professor of physics and astronomy at SJSU, and the deputy science team lead for NASA's Kepler Mission. She holds a bachelor's in physics from the UC Berkeley and a doctorate in astrophysics from UC Santa Cruz. After a post-doctoral fellowship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, she became inspired by the growing number of planets being discovered around other stars (500 such planets are currently known.) Eleven years later, she stands poised with the Kepler team to learn whether or not Earth-sized planets are abundant in our galaxy.

The lecture is co-sponsored by the Foothill College Astronomy Program, NASA Ames Research Center, SETI Institute and Astronomical Society of the Pacific. For more information, call (650) 949-7888.

The Fall Quarter theme is food, and topics taught in classrooms across the campus include theme-related subjects, including organics, food production, eating locally, the slow food movement and world hunger. ...from the FHDA Board President and Chancellor - Measure E

We appreciate the support of everyone who voted for Measure E to restore
and protect core academic courses and career training at Foothill and De
Anza colleges. We’re especially grateful to the community members,
faculty, staff and students who worked so hard as volunteers to pass
Measure E.

The Board of Trustees struggled for months deciding whether to put an
educational funding measure on the ballot. In the end, after seeing
thousands of students unable to get classes they need, the board felt
morally compelled to ask district voters if they would provide temporary
local funding to help offset deep state budget cuts that have hurt so
many students. It is bittersweet that a majority of voters supported
Measure E but that it did not receive the necessary two-thirds approval.

We know how highly our community values education and believe that in
better economic times more residents would have supported this modest,
limited-term parcel tax. Foothill and De Anza colleges will continue to
serve as many students as possible and help them succeed. The board is
committed to responsibly managing the public’s resources and meeting the
educational and training needs of the community. The district will
continue its ongoing efforts to reduce expenses and pursue alternative
funding sources.

Ultimately, Foothill-De Anza’s reputation as one of the most successful
and innovative community colleges in the nation stands on the quality of
our faculty and staff. In the months ahead, we will advocate in
Sacramento for improved funding for California’s community colleges and
work together with our employees to address the district’s fiscal
challenges.

Sincerely,

Bruce Swenson
President Board of Trustees

Linda Thor
Chancellor
