"Obamas to Plant White House Vegetable Garden"

On Friday, March 20th, 2009, 23 third graders will join First Lady Michelle Obama on the South Lawn of the White House to break ground on an 1100 square foot kitchen garden that will provide food for family dinners and formal dinners.

According to the New York Times:

The Obamas’ garden will have 55 varieties of vegetables grown from organic seedlings started at the executive mansion’s greenhouses.

And better still:

Almost the entire Obama family, including the president, will pull weeds, “whether they like it or not,” Mrs. Obama said laughing.

Eat the View is coordinated by Kitchen Gardeners International, a Maine-based 501c3 nonprofit network of 10,000 gardeners from 100 countries who are inspiring and teaching more people to grow some of their own food.

Spring Quarter registration is under way now through April 5. Continuing students can register online or by phone now through April 5. California residents pay just $13 per unit plus basic fees for Foothill classes. Most Foothill College courses are transferable to California State University and University of California campu ses as well as private colleges and universities.

Foothill Women's Basketball Returns to State Tournament for Third Year in a Row

With a 64-59 victory over Santa Rosa on last week, the Foothill Women Owls make the trip to this weekend to the State's Elite Eight Tournament for the third consecutive year. Support Owl athletics and watch the Foothill women face off against Ventura College Friday, March 13, at 5 p.m. at Selland Arena in downtown Fresno. Tickets are $10, adults; and $8, students. In the Santa Rosa game, Foothill was lead by sophomore captain Jessica Montgomery with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Ariel Castillo added 12 points while Kindra Jones chipped in 11 points and 8 rebounds and Tieara Jones had 8 points and 10 rebounds.

FMT Takes a Bite Out of Bat Boy, The Musical

Foothill Music Theatre (FMT), the musical-producing arm of the Foothill College Theatre Arts Department, presents Bat Boy, The Musical through March 22 in the Lohman Theatre at Foothill College. Ripped from the headlines of The Weekly World News, Bat Boy, The Musical is a classic love story with a serious bite. This delicious twist on the modern-day musical comedy keeps fang securely in cheek, as it tells the amazing story of a strange boy with pointy ears, his struggle to find a place in a world that shuns him, and the love that can create both miracles and madness. This instant classic is a clamorous high-slapping, groundbreaking musical, whimsical, and a hip tour de force. Performances are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., with matinees at 2 p.m. on all Sundays plus Saturdays March 14 and 21. Free Emergency Contraceptives Available at On-Campus Health Center

EOPS Hosts Final Exams Cram-a-Thon

Why study alone when you can do that last-minute test prep in an atmosphere where you can get immediate help and answers to your questions. Foothill’s EOPS Program will help students with the study push before finals at its first Cram-a-Thon event Wednesday, March 18, and Thursday, March 19, from 7 to 9 p.m.; and Friday, March 20, from noon to 5 p.m. in the Tutorial Center in Room 3526. Ten Scholarships Available to Attend Invent Your Future Conference for Women

Invent Your Future Conference for Women , a popular event that is dedicated to advancing the professional and personal development of women by providing tools, resources, training and inspiration, is offering 10 scholarships to Foothill women students to attend the conference Wednesday, April 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara. The scholarship includes the $225 registration fee as well as lunch and all April 1 conference events. The conference is ideal for women students from all college majors, and features presentations by nationally recognized keynote speakers, best-selling authors, thought leaders and business experts who offer informative seminars, tools and techniques to accelerate career advancement.

Review the complete conference program and speaker biographies . The deadline to apply for the scholarship is Monday, March 23, at 5 p.m. Scholarships are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. To be eligible for the scholarship, you must commit to attend the full one-day conference, supply personal transportation, and briefly meet with Lori Thomas in the Foothill College Marketing & Communications Office in Room 1930 no later than Monday, March 23, at 5 p.m.

New Scholarships Announced

Several new scholarships have been announced, details for which are posted on the college’s financial aid Web page . One of the new awards is the Dr. Jean Thomas Memorial Scholarship with a deadline of March 20. Check the site periodically to review new and continuing scholarships.

Annual Student-Directed One-Act Play Festival on Stage

Students enrolled in the Foothill Theatre Conservatory Program will present History in the Faking, six one-act vignettes satirizing historical icons, April 10–19 in the Lohman Theatre at Foothill College. Evening performances are April 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18 at 8 p.m. A matinee is set for Sunday, April 19, at 2 p.m. The Foothill Theatre Conservatory is an intensive theatre-training program for serious students of college-age and older. The production's six acts include Degas C'est Moi; Words, Words, Words; Variations on the Death of Trotsky; The Dark Lady of the Sonnets; Chamber Music; and Do Not Collect $200. Tickets are $14, general; $12, student/senior; and $7 for students with Foothill College OwlCard. Work & Study with Scientists in Ecuador This Summer

Find out how you can participate in Foothill's Ecuador Program this summer by attending a free information meeting Wednesday, April 15, at noon and again at 5 p.m. in Room 3103. You'll learn how Foothill students and Foothill Anthropology Instructor Samuel Connell team up with and an international group of researchers in Ecuador for four weeks of anthropological and archaeological coursework, field trips and service learning projects. Program classes, cultural field trips, costs, application process and deadlines will be covered. You’ll also learn how along with other researchers, you'll help conduct archaeological excavations and formulate a plan for supporting the indigenous communities that surround the archaeological resources of Pambamarca. You'll also have the chance to travel to some of Ecuador's famous attractions, including the capital city of Quito, stunning archaeological site s, artisan markets, and majestic natural wonders of the Andean Mountains. You earn between 6 and 12 academic credits from Foothill College while gaining valuable experience and improving your Spanish language skills. Foothill Music Theatre Sets Auditions for The Producers

Award-winning Foothill Music Theatre (FMT) announces auditions for its summer production of Mel Brooks’ The Producers. Auditions are Sunday, March 15, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. and Monday, March 16, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Lohman Theatre at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Performers need only attend one audition session. Strong singers, dancers and actors are needed for the large cast. An appointment is not necessary. Performers should prepare an up-tempo or Broadway ballad, and bring sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided. Songs from the show are acceptable. Auditioners should also dress for dance. Callbacks are March 21–23. Rehearsal begins June 1. Performances run from July 24 through Aug. 16. Winner of more Tony Awards than any other musical in theatre history, FMT’s production of The Producers will be directed by Jay Manley, with musical direction by Catherine Snider a nd choreography by Dottie Lester-White. Winter Quarter Final Exams Are March 24–27

Final examinations are given in all courses except physical education activity, CNSL 50, cooperative education and tutoring classes. Final exams normally will not be given in advance of the scheduled time. Review the Winter Quarter 2009 final exam schedule . You’re responsible for taking all assigned final examinations. Failure to take the final exam will result in an F grade. If you miss a final exam for a legitimate reason, you should immediately communicate with your instructor and counselor.

Foothill Authors Series Features Gisela Zebroski & The Baroness

The Foothill College Authors Series presents a discussion and book-signing by Gisela Zebroski, author of The Baroness , March 25 at noon in the Campus Center Student Lounge (Room 2313). Admission is free. The series is co-sponsored by the Foothill Commission and President's Office. Staff and faculty can earn PGA/PAA credit for attending a series session. A member of the Foothill Commission, Zebroski was age 19 when she left the ruins of post-war Germany to come to America. A Baltic German who was born in Latvia, she enjoyed a privileged childhood until age 5. The start of WWII uprooted her family and threw them into a chaotic world. Foraging for food and firewood, she discovered the beauty of nature, longed for her lost homeland and her father’s return from the war. He did not return. Convinced that their dismal existence was but a passing ph ase she prepared herself for a future in America. Her mother and siblings joined her. Partly based on her mother’s tales, The Baroness took shape as a novel. She is working on a sequel to The Baroness.

Foothill Partners with Pacific Graduate School of Psychology to Offer You a New Bachelor’s Degree Program

Beginning this fall, you’ll can begin earning a bachelor’s degree at Foothill, thanks to a new partnership with Pacific Graduate School of Psychology (PGSP). The new two-year completion program will be offered in business psychology, and all classes will meet at Foothill College.
