Friday Mourning Dove Blogging

A mourning dove couple has taken up residence on our deck and built (not much of a) nest in one of my hanging baskets. One egg is inside and they have been sitting on the egg for a little over a week. We have found out that it takes about 14 days for the eggs to incubate and then another 14 or so days for the babies to grow up and fly away.

We're looking forward to the hatching of our first grand-bird!

Graphic Designer Position Open

Job Description/Requirements:

SRI International, a research institute in Menlo Park, Calif., is seeking a qualified graphic designer to join a small design team in the Corporate and Marketing Communications department. SRI is the organization that invented the computer mouse and the foundations of personal computing, and today continues to develop high-value innovations that are transforming the way people work, live, and learn. The Corporate and Marketing Communications department develops and implements integrated programs in public relations, marketing communications, and staff communications to meet SRI’s business objectives.

Essential Functions:

Under the direction of the graphic services manager and department VP, the designer will work with other department members and staff members throughout SRI, including executives, managers, researchers, and other professionals. This individual is responsible for a variety of sometimes complex graphic design projects, including web development, logo and identity systems, presentations and printed materials, event and exhibit support materials, etc. Must be able to work directly with clients; translate needs into effective designs; present thoughtful solutions to non-design audiences; prepare production, budget and schedule details; and produce deliverables, including managing production with an in-house print shop and outside vendors. Must have excellent interpersonal and project management skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities within tight deadlines and budgets. Must be at ease working under varying circumstances -- independently, with other designers, and under art direction, and comfortable accepting constructive comments and modifying designs accordingly.

Other Duties:

Participate in department, design team, and project meetings; research photos and images; maintain job log; and archive completed projects.

Experience and Education Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or equivalent, with at least 7 years experience in graphic or visual design. Must have excellent knowledge and application of typography, and solid understanding of graphic and web design principles and current web technologies (html, css, javascript). Disciplined in graphic design theory, astute in prepress production, and knowledgeable in alternatives to 3D form factors. Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and Macromedia tools including Contribute and Dreamweaver. Proficiency in Flash, photography, or illustration a plus.
