Use Foothill Technology Classes as Your IT Training Department

Whether you're a single employee or a small- to medium-sized business, if you're going to compete in Silicon Valley, you need technology training. Foothill College offers you a variety of technology programs and courses that are designed to fit the topic you want to add to your resume, and the skill sets your employees need.

"All computer and technology classes at Foothill train people in the technology industry to be better at the jobs they do," says CTIS Division Dean Chuck Lindauer. "Students come to Foothill for fast, affordable training from knowledgeable faculty experts. In fact, 65 percent of our computer students already have bachelor degrees or higher. They choose Foothill because we train them quickly and at a reasonable cost."

In addition to offering technology education to individual students, Foothill is uniquely positioned to help small- and medium-sized companies keep employee skill sets current. Foothill understands the bottom line: Business leaders need to train employees in a way that is efficient, comprehensive and affordable. Smart business decision-makers are realizing the enormous return on investment that comes when they let Foothill be their IT training department. Foothill can quickly train employees, and offers outstanding faculty and equipment at convenient campus locations in Los Altos Hills and Palo Alto or on-site at your business location. Foothill can provide ongoing instruction or a quick intensive program such as six weeks for Oracle certification training. Learn more about how Foothill will work with your company to train your employees, by scheduling a consultation at (650) 949-7388. Astronomer to Discuss Jupiter's Tantalizing Moon: Water (and Life?) Under the Ice of Europa

Astronomer Cynthia Phillips will present Jupiter's Tantalizing Moon: Water (and Life?) Under the Ice of Europa, a non-technical, illustrated talk, Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. in the Smithwick Theater at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Admission is free and the public is invited. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Arrive early to locate parking.

Ever since robot spacecraft have been exploring the Jupiter system, one moon has especially captured the interest of astronomers. Although Europa's surface is cold and frozen, there is evidence that, under the ice, it has an ocean of warmer, liquid water. In her talk, Dr. Phillips will explore Europa's geology, focusing on the prospects for water and the possibilities of life in that deep alien ocean. Phillips is a principal investigator for a number of projects investigating Europa and Mars at the SETI Institute. She specializes in the geology of planetary surfaces and the search for life in the solar system. She worked with the Galileo spacecraft imaging team to help design observations of Europa and other moons of Jupiter. She is co-author of The Everything Astronomy Book and The Everything Einstein Book, both published by Adams Media.

The lecture is presented as part of the 6th Annual Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series sponsored by Foothill College, NASA-Ames Research Center, SETI Institute and Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Visitors must purchase a required parking permit for $2 (eight quarters). Parking lots 1, 3, 5 and 6 provide access to the theater. Foothill College is located on El Monte Road off Interstate 280. Trying to figure out what class to take??? Read on...

Here are some descriptions and student comments of some of the classes offered in the Internet Technologies department at Foothill College. If you have additional questions or need advice in what classes to register for, let me know!

COIN 51 Fundamentals of Internet Technology The course will focus on using the Internet to connect and communicate over the World Wide Web and E-mail, retrieve current useful information using searching tools, prepare a simple HTML Web page, and locate Internet resources to find software and answers to troubleshooting problems.

While the course description is simple, the depth of information & experiences available on these topics is great and it is up to you to design the LEVEL of learning experience that you need/want (from beginning to advanced)--the course and book are but a guide.

What students say:
Course structure is dependable, practice from text/assignments opens doors to other related research, learning from each other is FUN, and preparing a simple Webpage project report from scratch is creative!

"Get the text book WELL IN ADVANCE so that you are ready to start the assignments immediately...and get into the discussion Forums immediately. Don't be shy. Basically, think ahead and work ahead and you will be fine. Do not wait until the last minute...."

COIN 56 E-Business
This class was formerly called E-Commerce and was about online financial transactions for goods/services, such as sales/purchasing, online delivery, online shipment tracking, online auctions, etc. E-Business is a much broader system that uses a number of info-tech based business practices to enhance relationships between a business and its customers.
As this is the beginning overview class, you will be learning about the infrastructure and the vocabulary/concepts/strategies of E-Business (we will NOT be doing any HTML Website work). Topics include business models, value & supply chains, business strategy, electronic data interchange (EDI), e-payments & digital currency, integrating channels of business, e-marketing, security risks & legal issues, and current news about latest e-business trends offered for various levels of expertise.

Course is open to beginners as well as the experienced who are already running Website businesses -- there is something for Everyone! COIN 56 may be taken concurrently with COIN 72 (Web Marketing) and COIN 61 (HTML Publishing on the Web).

What students say:
"This is a contemporary, evolving subject matter area -- websites and e-biz practices change by the hour! Good opportunity for exploration of how today's business practices are changing."
"You'll have fun learning about how to work in today's e-business environment, and may even start your own online business! Take the Web Marketing and E-Commerce Projects after this one."

COIN 61 Publishing on the Web using HTML/XHTML explores the fundamentals of HyperText Mark-up Language (XHTML and HTML ) and electronic publishing on the Web. Students receive hands-on experience in producing a multi-page Web site with image, text, and links; tables, 56 frames, forms and simple multimedia. Students will utilized a college-provided web site and learn to upload and modify Web documents to a Web server. Also included will be discussion on interacting with a client; planning, designing, testing and maintaining a web site. Students should have a basic understanding of computer and keyboarding skills as covered in CIS 50A Using the Computer or equivalent and solid knowledge of Internet Fundamentals as covered in COIN 51 Internet Fundamentals or equivalent .

What students say:
I am enjoying COIN 61! The final project gave me some idea of all of the work that must have gone into developing the COIN 61 website. The materials you have prepared for this course are very clear and helpful. I have appreciated the assignments--they helped to guide me through a learning process. Thank you.

I really enjoyed creating my own site. The creative aspects of HTML are the most fun, but I also enjoy learning new techniques and ways of learning things.

COIN 63, Advanced Web Technologies, is the suggested follow-up to COIN 61. It highlights more advanced web technologies such as Cascading Style Sheets, CGI, Multimedia, JavaScript, Dynamic HTML, blogging, RSS and podcasting and XML. We go into great depth on CSS because it is the underlying foundation for advanced web technologies. COIN 63 is an exposure to advanced web technologies, not an in-depth coverage of them - we have advanced classes in those subjects. The idea is to expose students to make them knowledgeable and conversant and also able to revise scripts found on the web for their own purposes.

What students say:
"This class is very valuable for at least two reasons:

1) It covers a wide range of subjects I haven't taken on their own...I mean, I took one javascript class, but it didnt even have projects to work on like you gave....so I actually learned more in your class about javascript.

2)The way you set up the class was very organized and gave students a taste of several different technologies so that they can pick which ones they may want to focus on in future classes.

Also, I get bored easily...I like to switch gears and learn different things!

Its been fun!"

COIN 70a,Introduction to Programming with JavaScript has been specifically designed for those with NO programming background. It will be a "gentle" introduction to programming using the JavaScript language. Methods of problem-solving, which is often one of the most difficult initial barriers to understanding programming, will be discussed in addition to basic programming concepts.

COIN 72 Web Marketing This course is an overview of Web marketing, how websites are marketed on the Internet, and a look at successful online business models. Learn how to select an effective domain name and list your site to hundreds of search engines and directories, how to get quality links to your site, and use online mailing lists to advertise your site effectively.

Course open to beginners who want to work for a company using Web marketing, as well as the experienced entrepreneur who has a Website business and wants to make it more successful! COIN 72 may be taken concurrently with COIN 56 E-Business and COIN 61 Publishing on the Web.

COIN 74 Web Publishing Tools: Dreamweaver will teach students principles and methods of creating dynamic, Web sites using Dreamweaver and the latest Web technologies: JavaScript, Cascading Style Sheets, Java, audio, video, and animation plug-ins. The class will include techniques of authoring Web pages for different browsers and different end user platforms and principles of designing and maintaining efficient and successful Web sites.

What students say:
I was a bit acquainted with DW when I started this class and I really thought I would only learn a couple of things here and there. But in reality, I learned a lot!

COIN 76 Web Publishing Tools: Multimedia was designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of a variety of multimedia publishing tools. Tools may include Flash, Photoshop/Elements, iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie and Audacity, Adobe Acrobat or other sound and video digitizing software and video editing and processing software. Hands-on experience in producing Web pages which utilize these technologies will be emphasized.

What students say:
Just a note to thank you for a wonderful class. To be honest, I didnt really want to take this class but needed 5 units and didnt want to repeat any classes. As things are usually in life, when you least expected it, this turned out to be the funnest class I've ever taken.
Thank you for given us this opportunity to learn so much in just one
class!

COIN 82 Images for the Web In this class, you will learn how to make beautiful and fast downloading images for the web. This course will focus mainly on images and how they look and work on a website. You will learn how to improve digital camera images, how to do basic color correction for all images, and how to enhance your images. Two programs, Photoshop and Image Ready will be used in the course. Explore all the short cuts and web techniques that Photoshop has to offer such a making a Web Gallery in seconds, creating actions to minimize repeated tasks, and using vector graphics, cropping techniques, sizing images, CLUTs and more. You will learn how to set up your website pages in Photoshop and make it active using Image Ready. With Image Ready this class will explore image compression, slicing of images, rollovers, and image maps. By the end of the class you will have the knowledge to create your own website.

What students say:
I do want to thank you for what turned out to be a very useful class. My motive for enrolling was mainly just to find out what ImageReady is good for; being a photographer, and having used Photoshop almost entirely for photo retouching/enhancement, I had seen ImageReady on my Programs menu for years without knowing what it does.

Yes, your class explained that to me, but went way beyond that objective and revealed the uses of this powerful, versatile application.
