Register for Spring Quarter Now

Spring Quarter registration is under way now through April 5. Continuing students can register online or by phone now through April 5. New and former students can register online or by phone March 16 through April 5. Spring classes begin April 6 and run through June 26, unless otherwise noted in the class schedule. The online class schedule is the very best way to review the most current course information. California residents pay just $13 per unit plus basic fees for Foothill classes. A full range of student support services is also available, including financial aid , academic counseling , child care and tutoring . We can also help you complete the general education course requirements you need to transfer to a four-year university . Most Foothill College courses are transferable to California State University and University of California campu ses as well as private colleges and universities.

Foothill Women's Basketball Returns to State Tournament for Third Year in a Row

With a 64-59 victory over Santa Rosa on last week, the Foothill Women Owls make the trip to this weekend to the State's Elite Eight Tournament for the third consecutive year. Support Owl athletics and watch the Foothill women face off against Ventura College Friday, March 13, at 5 p.m. at Selland Arena in downtown Fresno. Tickets are $10, adults; and $8, students. In the Santa Rosa game, Foothill was lead by sophomore captain Jessica Montgomery with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Ariel Castillo added 12 points while Kindra Jones chipped in 11 points and 8 rebounds and Tieara Jones had 8 points and 10 rebounds.

FMT Takes a Bite Out of Bat Boy, The Musical

Foothill Music Theatre (FMT), the musical-producing arm of the Foothill College Theatre Arts Department, presents Bat Boy, The Musical through March 22 in the Lohman Theatre at Foothill College. Ripped from the headlines of The Weekly World News, Bat Boy, The Musical is a classic love story with a serious bite. This delicious twist on the modern-day musical comedy keeps fang securely in cheek, as it tells the amazing story of a strange boy with pointy ears, his struggle to find a place in a world that shuns him, and the love that can create both miracles and madness. This instant classic is a clamorous high-slapping, groundbreaking musical, whimsical, and a hip tour de force. Performances are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., with matinees at 2 p.m. on all Sundays plus Saturdays March 14 and 21. Free Emergency Contraceptives Available at On-Campus Health Center

EOPS Hosts Final Exams Cram-a-Thon

Why study alone when you can do that last-minute test prep in an atmosphere where you can get immediate help and answers to your questions. Foothill’s EOPS Program will help students with the study push before finals at its first Cram-a-Thon event Wednesday, March 18, and Thursday, March 19, from 7 to 9 p.m.; and Friday, March 20, from noon to 5 p.m. in the Tutorial Center in Room 3526. Ten Scholarships Available to Attend Invent Your Future Conference for Women

Invent Your Future Conference for Women , a popular event that is dedicated to advancing the professional and personal development of women by providing tools, resources, training and inspiration, is offering 10 scholarships to Foothill women students to attend the conference Wednesday, April 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara. The scholarship includes the $225 registration fee as well as lunch and all April 1 conference events. The conference is ideal for women students from all college majors, and features presentations by nationally recognized keynote speakers, best-selling authors, thought leaders and business experts who offer informative seminars, tools and techniques to accelerate career advancement.

Review the complete conference program and speaker biographies . The deadline to apply for the scholarship is Monday, March 23, at 5 p.m. Scholarships are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. To be eligible for the scholarship, you must commit to attend the full one-day conference, supply personal transportation, and briefly meet with Lori Thomas in the Foothill College Marketing & Communications Office in Room 1930 no later than Monday, March 23, at 5 p.m.

New Scholarships Announced

Several new scholarships have been announced, details for which are posted on the college’s financial aid Web page . One of the new awards is the Dr. Jean Thomas Memorial Scholarship with a deadline of March 20. Check the site periodically to review new and continuing scholarships.

Annual Student-Directed One-Act Play Festival on Stage

Students enrolled in the Foothill Theatre Conservatory Program will present History in the Faking, six one-act vignettes satirizing historical icons, April 10–19 in the Lohman Theatre at Foothill College. Evening performances are April 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18 at 8 p.m. A matinee is set for Sunday, April 19, at 2 p.m. The Foothill Theatre Conservatory is an intensive theatre-training program for serious students of college-age and older. The production's six acts include Degas C'est Moi; Words, Words, Words; Variations on the Death of Trotsky; The Dark Lady of the Sonnets; Chamber Music; and Do Not Collect $200. Work & Study with Scientists in Ecuador This Summer

Find out how you can participate in Foothill's Ecuador Program this summer by attending a free information meeting Wednesday, April 15, at noon and again at 5 p.m. in Room 3103. You'll learn how Foothill students and Foothill Anthropology Instructor Samuel Connell team up with and an international group of researchers in Ecuador for four weeks of anthropological and archaeological coursework, field trips and service learning projects. Program classes, cultural field trips, costs, application process and deadlines will be covered. You’ll also learn how along with other researchers, you'll help conduct archaeological excavations and formulate a plan for supporting the indigenous communities that surround the archaeological resources of Pambamarca. You'll also have the chance to travel to some of Ecuador's famous attractions, including the capital city of Quito, stunning archaeological site s, artisan markets, and majestic natural wonders of the Andean Mountains. Foothill Music Theatre Sets Auditions for The Producers

Award-winning Foothill Music Theatre (FMT) announces auditions for its summer production of Mel Brooks’ The Producers. Auditions are Sunday, March 15, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. and Monday, March 16, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Lohman Theatre at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Performers need only attend one audition session. Strong singers, dancers and actors are needed for the large cast. An appointment is not necessary. Performers should prepare an up-tempo or Broadway ballad, and bring sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided. Songs from the show are acceptable. Auditioners should also dress for dance. Callbacks are March 21–23. Rehearsal begins June 1. Performances run from July 24 through Aug. 16. Winner of more Tony Awards than any other musical in theatre history, FMT’s production of The Producers will be directed by Jay Manley, with musical direction by Catherine Snider a nd choreography by Dottie Lester-White. Winter Quarter Final Exams Are March 24–27

Final examinations are given in all courses except physical education activity, CNSL 50, cooperative education and tutoring classes. Final exams normally will not be given in advance of the scheduled time. Review the Winter Quarter 2009 final exam schedule . You’re responsible for taking all assigned final examinations. Failure to take the final exam will result in an F grade. If you miss a final exam for a legitimate reason, you should immediately communicate with your instructor and counselor.

Foothill Authors Series Features Gisela Zebroski & The Baroness

The Foothill College Authors Series presents a discussion and book-signing by Gisela Zebroski, author of The Baroness , March 25 at noon in the Campus Center Student Lounge (Room 2313). Admission is free. The series is co-sponsored by the Foothill Commission and President's Office. Staff and faculty can earn PGA/PAA credit for attending a series session. A member of the Foothill Commission, Zebroski was age 19 when she left the ruins of post-war Germany to come to America. A Baltic German who was born in Latvia, she enjoyed a privileged childhood until age 5. The start of WWII uprooted her family and threw them into a chaotic world. Foraging for food and firewood, she discovered the beauty of nature, longed for her lost homeland and her father’s return from the war. He did not return. Convinced that their dismal existence was but a passing ph ase she prepared herself for a future in America. Her mother and siblings joined her. Partly based on her mother’s tales, The Baroness took shape as a novel. She is working on a sequel to The Baroness.

Foothill Partners with Pacific Graduate School of Psychology to Offer You a New Bachelor’s Degree Program

Beginning this fall, you’ll can begin earning a bachelor’s degree at Foothill, thanks to a new partnership with Pacific Graduate School of Psychology (PGSP). The new two-year completion program will be offered in business psychology, and all classes will meet at Foothill College. Peru—9 Photographers Exhibit in the KCI Gallery

Peru—9 Photographers showcases the work of nine student-photographers who participated in the Foothill-De Anza Campus Abroad Program to Peru last summer. The exhibit runs now through March 7 in the gallery of the Krause Center for Innovation at Foothill College. Lead by Foothill Photography Instructor Ron Herman, the artists traveled to Cusco, Puno and throughout the Sacred Valley to learn about the culture, history and people of Peru. Featured photographers include Barbara Barone, Barbara Bucholz Collins, Michael Collins, Frances Heldt Grant, Jan Laskowski, Sofia Laskowski, Kathy McGovern, Arnona Oren and Vivian Tsung. Free Cal Grant Workshop Is Feb. 19

Deadline to Submit Application for UC Berkeley Transfer Mentorship Program Is Feb. 20

UC Berkeley offers its exciting Starting Point Mentorship Program (SPMP) to Foothill College students who intend to transfer to UC Berkeley. You must submit an application packet to be considered for this program and the application deadline is Feb. 20. SPMP teams Bay Area community college students with current UC Berkeley transfer student-mentors. This program is specifically designed to encourage underserved students–returning students, first-in-family college students, students combining school and parenting, students from low-income backgrounds, etc.,–to explore their academic potential and prepare themselves for transfer to UC Berkeley. The goal of the mentor/mentee relationship is to provide prospective students with tools, resources and insight to the student-mentor's experience at Cal along with encouragement and motivation to pursue higher education. Master Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra Concerts

Under the baton of David Ramadanoff, Master Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra will present two concerts performing Beethoven's King Stephen Overture, Ernst Bloch's Concerto Grosso for String Orchestra with Piano Obbligato, and Shubert's Symphony No. 4. Ramadanoff was a prizewinner in the prestigious National Hungarian radio and television competition, and we are honoring Hungary's first king by featuring Beethoven's King Stephen Overture. Performances are Saturday, Feb. 21, 8 p.m. at Valley Presbyterian Church in Portola Valley; and Sunday, Feb., 22, 3 p.m. at Los Altos United Methodist Church in Los Altos. Foothill College Authors Series: Daniel Leeson & The Mozart Cache

The Foothill College Authors Series presents Daniel Leeson, author of the The Mozart Cache and The Mozart Forgeries, Feb. 25 at noon in Room 2313. Admission is free. The series is co-sponsored by the Foothill Commission and President's Office. Staff and faculty can earn PGA/PAA credit for attending a series session. Leeson will discuss his latest book, The Mozart Cache, a detailed critical inspection of a collection of objects that have their feet in two worlds, namely Mozart historical research and art historical study. Following his retirement from IBM after almost 30 years, Leeson taught mathematics at De Anza College for an additional 15 years. Simultaneously, and during those 45 years, he was a professional performing symphonic musician, playing clarinet, basset horn and bass clarinet with many professional organizations, including the San Jose Symphony, San Francisco Opera, Oaklan d Symphony, San Diego Symphony, San Jose/Cleveland Ballet, San Francisco Midsummer Mozart Festival Orchestra and others. To occupy himself during the hours of travel and overnight stays during his business career, he began to study musicology. He has published at least 50 technical papers in the Mozart Jahrbuch, Eighteenth Century Music, International Journal of Musicology, Musical Times, Music and Letters, Musical America, and other journals. In addition to The Mozart Cache, he is the author of Opus Ultimum: The Story of the Mozart Requiem (Algora Press, 2006), a novel, The Mozart Forgeries, (iUniverse, 2006), and one of the earliest texts on computer programming, Basic Programming Concepts (Holt, Rinehart, & Winston, 1962). For ten years he was an officer and treasurer of the Mozart Society of America. In both 1992 and 1993, he was a faculty member of the Mozart Opera Studies Institute sponsored by San Francisco State University and Ca lifornia State University, Fresno.

Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series: The Dawn of Creation—The First Two Billion Years

As part of the 10th annual Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series, astronomer Steven Beckwith, the former director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, which runs the Hubble Program, will discuss The Dawn of Creation: The First Two Billion Years, an illustrated, non-technical lecture, Wednesday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill. This talk is part of the local events celebrating the International Year of Astronomy in 2009. Beckwith is currently the vice president for research and graduate studies for the University of California's 10 campuses. His 30-year research career spans many areas of astronomy, including the formation and early evolution of planets around other stars and the birth of galaxies in the early universe. In 2004, he led the team that created the Hubble Ultra Deep Field Image, resulting in the discovery of the most distant galaxies ever seen. Admission is free and the public is invited. Thinking About Transferring?

Take this opportunity to talk with admissions officers from different schools. They can help you with questions about your major, admissions requirements, and much more. Need Help Choosing a Major?

Go to a workshop designed for students who may be undecided or would like more information before making a final decision on a major and/or career. Workshops are free and no pre-registration is required. The meeting rooms are located in the Campus Center and you may bring your lunch if you wish. Look for additional workshops in Spring Quarter.

Celebrate Black History Month

Yes We Have, Yes We Can, Yes We Will! is the theme for Foothill's 2009 Black History Month celebration. You are invited to participate in a variety of events featuring poetry, music, literature, art and dance throughout February. For a complete listing of events, see Black History Month 2009.

Dallas Black Dance Theatre at Foothill College

As part of its popular Black History Month celebration, Foothill College will host a performance by world-renowned Dallas Black Dance Theatre on February 6 at 8 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College. Free Lipid Cholesterol Screening

The on-campus Health Services Office will provide free lipid cholesterol screening Feb. 3 and 4 from 8 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. in room 2126 in the Campus Center. Screenings will be conducted by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, call (650) 949-7243.

The Foothill College Theatre Arts Department presents a one-night-only performance of Heather Raffo's 9 Parts of Desire, the critically acclaimed production that stars shape-shifting actress Luisa Sermol in an incandescent portrayal of nine different women, February 8 at 7 p.m. in the Lohman Theatre at Foothill College.
