Hands Across California to Raise Awareness, Scholarships for Community College Students
On Sunday, April 17, Hands Across California (HAC) will bring together an estimated 1 million people, including students, faculty, staff, celebrities and elected officials to join hands up and down California in support of the state's nearly 3 million community college students. HAC is estimated to be the largest charitable event for higher education in American history. It will connect Sacramento to San Diego in a nearly 1,000-mile route. The local gathering point for friends of Foothill College is at 4 p.m. at 26800 Fremont Road in Los Altos Hills. For details, call the Foothill Student Activities Office at (650) 949-7218. Net proceeds from the event will directly benefit the California Community Colleges Scholarship Endowment (CCCSE), a permanent fund that provides annual scholarships to thousands of student s every year. To learn more about HAC, be a part of this historic event or donate to the cause, visit www.HandsAcrossCalifornia.org. Donations of $10 can also be made by texting HANDS to 27722.
California's Community Colleges serve as the nation's largest system of higher education and were created to provide affordable and accessible educational opportunities for all Californians. Today, the system serves nearly 3 million students each year, enrolls three out of every ten Californians age 18–24, educates the majority of the state's work force, and provides a stepping-stone for students on the pathway to four-year and graduate degrees.
Thanks to a commitment from The Bernard Osher Foundation, every dollar raised through HAC will receive a 50-percent match that will be donated to the CCCSE. The ultimate goal is to build a $100 million scholarship endowment that will work to provide desperately needed financial support to at least 5,000 students every year, forever.

Astronomy Lecture: Our Explosive Sun—New Views of the Nearest Star
As part of the 12th annual Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series, astronomer Thomas Berger, Ph.D., from Lockheed Martin's Solar & Astrophysics Lab, will discuss Our Explosive Sun: New Views of the Nearest Star & The Largest Explosions in the Solar System, an illustrated, non-technical lecture, Wednesday, April 20, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Admission is free and the public is invited. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Arrive early to locate parking.
Recent satellite missions are giving scientists dramatic new views of the Sun and the huge magnetic explosions in its outer layers that cause flares and the ejections of huge masses of superheated gas. For example, the Solar Dynamics Observatory, a NASA satellite launched in 2010, is producing images of the Sun's million-degree outer atmosphere—the corona—with new telescopes that produce the fastest movies of the Sun ever taken. Dr. Berger will take us on a tour through our Sun's atmosphere with images and movies from these missions and show why the Sun continues to fascinate and perplex both scientists and the public.
An astrophysicist at the Lockheed Martin Solar & Astrophysics Laboratory in Palo Alto, Dr. Berger specializes in designing and using telescopes and other instruments to observe the Sun's magnetic fields and outer atmosphere. He studied physics and engineering as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, and originally planned on a career in aeronautical engineering. But during graduate education at Stanford University, he became fascinated by the physics of the Sun and he hasn't looked back since. He has been a principal investigator on several NASA grants to study the Sun using ground-based solar telescopes, and is currently a co-investigator on the Japanese/US/UK Hinode space mission.
The free lecture series is sponsored by the Foothill College Astronomy Program, NASA Ames Research Center, SETI Institute and Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Past lectures from the series are available online in MP3-format.

Advance purchase tickets are $10 online; tickets at the door are $15. Parking is $2. Foothill faculty and staff can earn PGA/PAA credit for attending.
Vicki Abeles, a concerned mother turned filmmaker, aims her camera at the high-stakes, high-pressure culture that has invaded our schools and our children's lives, creating unhealthy, disengaged, unprepared and stressed-out youth. Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people in all types of communities who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that students aren't developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to do what's best for their kids, Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in our schools: Cheating has become commonplace; students are disengaged; stress-related illness and depression are rampant; and many young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.
"…The film has raised difficult questions about how to raise well-adjusted children at a time when schools seem test-obsessed, advanced classes are the norm and parents worry that their children will not go as far in life as they have." (Washington Post, 10/7/2010)
The screening is presented by Foothill College Professional Development and the college's Painting the Future Annual Child Development Conference.
Lots 1, 7 and 8 provide easy access to the theatre. Purchase the required campus parking permit for $2 from yellow dispensers in any student lot. For more information, call (925) 310-4242.

Foothill to Screen Race to Nowhere Documentary May 17
Foothill College will screen Race to Nowhere: The Dark Side of America's Achievement Culture Tuesday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. The award-winning documentary is a call to action to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens.
