Memorial Service for Foothill Football Coach Doug Boyett Is Feb. 11 in Gym

With dedication and hard work as its cornerstone, the Foothill College Football Program has emerged as one of the top community college programs in Northern California. Since 2007, the team has been helmed by Head Coach Doug Boyett, M.A. The Foothill College community mourns the loss of Coach Boyett, who died Jan. 27.

"Doug cared deeply for his students and took great pride in their academic accomplishments which were numerous under his guidance," said Foothill College President Judy C. Miner, Ed.D. "He will be greatly missed by his Foothill family."

Watch the touching news story about Coach Boyett that features Foothill players and coaches that was reported by NBC Bay Area News Reporter George Kiriyama Feb. 2.

Please wear aloha or tropical apparel in vivid colors to honor Coach Boyett's love of the Hawaiian culture, and join friends and family for the memorial Saturday, Feb. 11, at 1 p.m. at the Foothill College Gymnasium, 12345 El Monte Road in Los Altos Hills. Parking is free in Lots 2 and 3. Shuttle service up the hill will be available. The public is also invited to the viewing Friday, Feb. 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Roller, Hapgood & Tinney Funeral Chapel, 980 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto.

A native of Palo Alto, Doug Boyett, 52, took over the Foothill College Football Program in 2007 after more than 20 years as the team's defensive coordinator. In his five years as the head coach, the Owls posted a 41–13 record with four bowl victories. Under Boyett, the Owls have achieved some of their highest national rankings, including fourth in 2007 and seventh in 2010. Coach Boyett was always looking for the next great Owl.

Long before his career as a coach, Boyett was a student at Foothill, and earned the college's associate degree. He also played defensive back under Foothill Head Coach Jim Fairchild in 1978–1979. He played one year at CSU Sonoma, and earned a bachelor's degree in physical education at CSU Chico. He also earned a master's degree in physical education from Saint Mary's College.

"Doug Boyett has been an outstanding coach and instructor for the Foothill football program for many years," said friend, colleague and Foothill Physical Education Instructor Ron Oburn, who hired Boyett for the top coaching position in 2007. "Foothill student-athletes have greatly benefited from his leadership and his focus on education and athletics."

Owls' football success has been matched by student-athlete success in the classroom with 90 percent of Boyett's student-athletes transferring to four-year universities. The Owls have averaged 13 scholarships each season, earning a reputation among four-year universities as a place to find exceptional young men. In recent years, student-athletes from Foothill's football program have transferred to a variety of four-year schools, including Angelo State University, Arizona State University, Arkansas Tech University, Boise State University, Brigham Young University, Central Washington University, Delta State University, Faulkner University, Fresno State University (CSU), Indiana University, Louisiana Tech University, Menlo College, Old Dominion University, Oklahoma Panhandle State University, Oregon State University, San Jose State University (CSU), University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Davis, University of Idaho, University of Nevada, University of San Diego, University of Southern California, Utah State University, Western Carolina University and Western Oregon University.

A full-time assistant coach and physical education instructor at Foothill College since 1990, Boyett was the fifth coach to lead the Foothill Owls. Former head coaches include Bill Abbey, 1958–1975; Jim Fairchild, 1975–1985; Gene Scattini, 1985–1994; and Marshall Sperbeck, 1994–2006. Foothill College Kinesiology & Athletics Instructor Kelly Edwards, who has served as the Foothill Owls offensive coordinator for the past five years, took over interim head coaching duties Jan. 30.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Doug Boyett Memorial Fund, which will benefit Foothill College student-athletes who participate in the college's football program. Established with the Foothill-De Anza Foundation, donations to the memorial fund can be made online or by personal check.

To donate online, access www.foundation@fhda.edu, click the Give Now link and indicate that your gift is for the Doug Boyett Memorial Fund; or
If you prefer, you may make a personal check payable to FHDA Foundation, indicate Doug Boyett Memorial Fund on your check's memo line and send it to the Foothill-De Anza Foundation, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills, CA 94022-4599.

Day-Use Parking Permit Now $3

The fee for the Foothill College day-use campus parking permit has increased to $3. The increase was approved by the Foothill-De Anza Community College District Board of Trustees. Parking permit dispensers at Foothill College have been reprogrammed to collect $3 for purchase of the day-use permit. One-dollar bills and quarters are accepted by dispensers. Dispensers are located in all student parking lots. A parking permit is required at all times at the Foothill College campus in Los Altos Hills. Failure to display a parking permit will result in a citation. A fee increase is not planned for the college's annual and/or quarterly campus parking permit at this time.
