Online Class Schedule Available Now; Printed Version to Arrive in Continuing Students’ Homes Beginning Next Week

Watch your home mailbox for the new edition of Foothill’s Spring Quarter Class Schedule/The Heights newsletter, which begins arriving in area homes next week. Remember, the online class schedule includes the most up-to-date, accurate information, so bookmark its link and visit often. Registration for continuing students is March 9–April 5. New and former students can register March 16–April 5. Spring Quarter classes begin April 6 and continue through June 26, unless otherwise noted in the class schedule.

Foothill Celebrates Black History Month throughout February

Students, faculty, staff and community leaders have created an exciting calendar of cultural enrichment activities to commemorate Black History Month at Foothill throughout February. Events include guest speakers, live entertainment, film series and more. For more information, call (650) 949-7282.

Peru—9 Photographers Exhibit in the KCI Gallery

Peru—9 Photographers showcases the work of nine student-photographers who participated in the Foothill-De Anza Campus Abroad Program to Peru last summer. The exhibit runs now through March 7 in the gallery of the Krause Center for Innovation at Foothill College. Lead by Foothill Photography Instructor Ron Herman, the artists traveled to Cusco, Puno and throughout the Sacred Valley to learn about the culture, history and people of Peru. Featured photographers include Barbara Barone, Barbara Bucholz Collins, Michael Collins, Frances Heldt Grant, Jan Laskowski, Sofia Laskowski, Kathy McGovern, Arnona Oren and Vivian Tsung. Gallery hours are Mondays through Fridays, 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

Free Emergency Contraceptives Available at On-Campus Health Center

The on-campus Health Services Office provides students with free emergency contraceptives such as the morning-after pill and Plan B pill. The center teams up with Planned Parenthood to provide this service. For more information, call (650) 949-7243 or visit the center in Room 2126.

Free Rapid HIV Testing & Counseling

El Camino Youth Symphony Presents Winter Concert

El Camino Youth Symphony , a member of the Foothill College Performing Arts Alliance, presents its annual Winter Spirit Concert Saturday, Feb. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. The program features Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony in B minor, Mvt I; Hummel's Trumpet Concerto, Mvt I, Shannon Walsh, soloist; Sarasate's Zigeuenerweisen, Allen Huang, soloist; Khatchaturian's Violin Concerto arr. for flute, Mvt I, Max Wu, soloist and Gounod's Faust: Ballet Music. Free Cal Grant Workshop Is Feb. 19

If you need money for college, attend the Cal Grant Workshop Thursday, Feb. 19, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Room 2020. Admission is free. The Cal Grant Program serves California residents who plan to attend or are already attending a California college. This workshop will explain the application process, describe the different Cal Grants and advise students who already have a Cal Grant how best to maximize the benefits while at Foothill College and upon transfer to a four-year university. Deadline to Submit Application for UC Berkeley Transfer Mentorship Program Is Feb. 20

UC Berkeley offers its exciting Starting Point Mentorship Program (SPMP) to Foothill College students who intend to transfer to UC Berkeley. You must submit an application packet to be considered for this program and the application deadline is Feb. 20. SPMP teams Bay Area community college students with current UC Berkeley transfer student-mentors. This program is specifically designed to encourage underserved students–returning students, first-in-family college students, students combining school and parenting, students from low-income backgrounds, etc.,–to explore their academic potential and prepare themselves for transfer to UC Berkeley. The goal of the mentor/mentee relationship is to provide prospective students with tools, resources and insight to the student-mentor's experience at Cal along with encouragement and motivation to pursue higher education. Master Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra Concerts

Under the baton of David Ramadanoff, Master Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra will present two concerts performing Beethoven's King Stephen Overture, Ernst Bloch's Concerto Grosso for String Orchestra with Piano Obbligato, and Shubert's Symphony No. 4. Ramadanoff was a prizewinner in the prestigious National Hungarian radio and television competition, and we are honoring Hungary's first king by featuring Beethoven's King Stephen Overture. Performances are Saturday, Feb. 21, 8 p.m. at Valley Presbyterian Church in Portola Valley; and Sunday, Feb., 22, 3 p.m. at Los Altos United Methodist Church in Los Altos. Foothill College Authors Series: Daniel Leeson & The Mozart Cache

The Foothill College Authors Series presents Daniel Leeson, author of the The Mozart Cache and The Mozart Forgeries, Feb. 25 at noon in Room 2313. Admission is free. The series is co-sponsored by the Foothill Commission and President's Office. Staff and faculty can earn PGA/PAA credit for attending a series session. Leeson will discuss his latest book, The Mozart Cache, a detailed critical inspection of a collection of objects that have their feet in two worlds, namely Mozart historical research and art historical study. Following his retirement from IBM after almost 30 years, Leeson taught mathematics at De Anza College for an additional 15 years. Simultaneously, and during those 45 years, he was a professional performing symphonic musician, playing clarinet, basset horn and bass clarinet with many professional organizations, including the San Jose Symphony, San Francisco Opera, Oaklan d Symphony, San Diego Symphony, San Jose/Cleveland Ballet, San Francisco Midsummer Mozart Festival Orchestra and others. To occupy himself during the hours of travel and overnight stays during his business career, he began to study musicology. He has published at least 50 technical papers in the Mozart Jahrbuch, Eighteenth Century Music, International Journal of Musicology, Musical Times, Music and Letters, Musical America, and other journals. In addition to The Mozart Cache, he is the author of Opus Ultimum: The Story of the Mozart Requiem (Algora Press, 2006), a novel, The Mozart Forgeries, (iUniverse, 2006), and one of the earliest texts on computer programming, Basic Programming Concepts (Holt, Rinehart, & Winston, 1962). For ten years he was an officer and treasurer of the Mozart Society of America. In both 1992 and 1993, he was a faculty member of the Mozart Opera Studies Institute sponsored by San Francisco State University and Ca lifornia State University, Fresno.

Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series: The Dawn of Creation—The First Two Billion Years

As part of the 10th annual Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series, astronomer Steven Beckwith, the former director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, which runs the Hubble Program, will discuss The Dawn of Creation: The First Two Billion Years, an illustrated, non-technical lecture, Wednesday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill. This talk is part of the local events celebrating the International Year of Astronomy in 2009. Beckwith is currently the vice president for research and graduate studies for the University of California's 10 campuses. His 30-year research career spans many areas of astronomy, including the formation and early evolution of planets around other stars and the birth of galaxies in the early universe. In 2004, he led the team that created the Hubble Ultra Deep Field Image, resulting in the discovery of the most distant galaxies ever seen. Admission is free and the public is invited. Introduction:
The Foothill College Second Annual Business Plan Competition is intended to simulate the real-world process of entrepreneurs soliciting start-up funds from early-stage investors and venture capital firms. The potential commercial application of the idea, the strength of the management team, and the clarity and persuasiveness of the written plan and oral presentation, all influence the judges’ decisions.

Ultimately, the winning team should be one in which the judges would most likely invest their money. All areas of business, sciences, the arts, and green sustainable ideas are encouraged to compete.

The Scholarship awards break-down are:

• Second Place $2,500
• Third Place $1,500
• Fourth Place $1,000
• Fifth Place $1,000

Requirements for Participation:
The Foothill College Second Annual Business Plan Competition is open to current Foothill College students with a student body card (Owl Card). Members from the community are free to ask two (2) Foothill College students to assist them in building the plan and have complete control of the presentation. No one other than currently enrolled Foothill College students may present. Participants must be enrolled in winter and spring quarters of 2009 at Foothill Col-
lege, and must be either continuing in fall 2009 or eligible to transfer June 2009.
Participants [Students and Community] must attend one of the informational and sign-up workshops in Room 3015, organized by the Business, Economics, and Accounting Clubs (BEAC).
