** White House Garden Yields Lots of Greens **

After weeks of digging and planting, watering and weeding, it was harvest time on Tuesday in the White House garden.

First Lady Michelle Obama was joined by a group of elementary school students who harvested 73 pounds of lettuce, 12 pounds of snap peas and one cucumber from the vegetable patch. (The garden also produced beans, kale, collards, broccoli and chard.)

“Today is the culmination of a lot of hard work,” Mrs. Obama told the students from Bancroft Elementary School, who started working on the garden with her in March.

White House Associate Chef Sam Kass emphasized that no fertilizer or herbicides had been used in the garden. He said the soil was fortified with crab meal from the Chesapeake Bay, green sand compost and lime powder. He said that Bo, the family dog, had not eaten any of the vegetables though he noted that “something is nibbling a little bit on the kale.”

Summer Session registration is under way now through June 28 for continuing students and new and former students. Summer classes begin June 29 and run through Aug. 9, unless otherwise noted in the class schedule. The online class schedule is the very best way to review the most current course information. For convenience, you can apply for admission, register for classes, review the class schedule and course catalog, pay enrollment fees, and purchase textbooks and parking permit online at www.foothill.edu. California residents pay just $13 per unit plus basic fees for Foothill classes. A full range of student support services is also available, including financial aid, academic counseling, child care and tutoring. Foothill College can help you earn a specialized certificate, associate degree or upgrade your current job skills. We can also help you complete the general education course requirements you need to transfer to a four-year university. Most Foothill College courses are transferable to California State University and University of California campuses as well as private colleges and universities.

Final Exams for Spring Quarter 2009


Final examinations are given in all courses except physical education activity, CNSL 50, cooperative education and tutoring courses. Final examinations normally will not be given in advance of the scheduled time. Review the final exam schedule. You are responsible for taking all assigned final examinations. Failure to take the final exam will result in an F grade. If you miss a final exam for a legitimate reason, you should immediately communicate with your instructors and counselor.

Commencement Ceremony Is June 26

Foothill College presents the 49th Annual Commencement Ceremony Friday, June 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Library Quad. The evening will feature inspirational messages from Foothill President Judy C. Miner, Ed.D., as well as student speaker Tim Craig, faculty speaker Lauren Popell Velasco and keynote speaker Gloria Walton. Tickets are not required and event parking in student lots is free. COIN 82, Images for the Web - Online

Learn how to make beautiful and fast downloading images for the web. This course will focus mainly on images and graphics and how they look and work on a website. You will learn how to improve digital camera images, how to do basic color correction for all images, and how to enhance your images. Several programs will be addressed, Photoshop, Lightroom, Fireworks, Dreamweaver and Flash, but you will only need Photoshop to complete the course. Explore all the short cuts and web techniques that Photoshop has to offer such as making a Web Gallery in seconds, creating actions to minimize repeated tasks, and using vector graphics, cropping techniques, sizing images, CLUTs and more. Bringing bitmaps and graphics into Flash will also be covered. You will learn how to design stronger web pages. Also explored are image compression, slicing of images and rollovers. By the end of the class you will have more beautiful web pages that run fast.
