Updated Information for On-Campus H1N1 & Seasonal Flu Vaccines

Foothill College continues to work closely with Santa Clara County Public Health Services to monitor H1N1 influenza in our community and to make decisions about the best steps to take to protect the health of Foothill students, faculty and staff. Foothill has not yet received its allotment of vaccines from the federal government. As soon as the vaccines arrive, an announcement will be posted on the Foothill College Web site and the college will then offer on-campus H1N1 vaccinations to currently enrolled students at no charge and to FHDA employees for $10 from the following CDC-specified first-priority groups:
Currently enrolled Foothill students age 24 or younger;
Parents and caretakers of infants, age 6 months or younger ;
Women who are pregnant ;
Health care workers, emergency services personnel and police officers;
Adults, ages 25 to 64, who have chronic health conditions (arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV infection, etc.); and
Individuals who are uninsured or who are unable to obtain the H1N1 vaccine for other reasons.
Foothill College will offer H1N1 Flu vaccinations to the remainder of our campus community when the college receives its second allotment of vaccines, which is expected in early December. If you have questions about allergies, vaccine contraindications, and whether you should or should not get vaccinated, call the Foothill College Health Services Office at (650) 949-7243.

Here is what you can do to help:
Always cover your cough. Cover your mouth and nose by coughing or sneezing into your bent elbow ;
Practice good hand hygiene;
If you are on campus and feel ill, report to the Health Services Office in Room 2126;
Stay at home if you develop flu-like symptoms. Remain at home until at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medicine; and
Check with your doctor about getting yourself, your children or family members vaccinated for seasonal flu and H1N1 flu, if you are in a high-risk group.

It's 1940s NYC with My Sister Eileen On Stage

My Sister Eileen travels from Ohio and NYC to the Foothill College Lohman Theatre Nov. 6 through Nov. 22, as the college's Theatre Arts Department stages its fall production. Performances are Nov. 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. Sunday matinees are Nov. 15 and 22 at 2 p.m.

When two plucky sisters from Ohio move into a basement apartment in 1940s Greenwich Village, they discover much about life in the big city and each other. Filled with memorably quirky characters and a visit from the Brazilian Navy, this charmingly humorous play, derived from the stories of Ruth McKenney, later became the basis of the musical hit Wonderful Town. Written by Joseph A. Fields and Jerome Chodorov, the Foothill College production is directed by Marcia Frederick, who is celebrating her 40th anniversary in local theatre. The show includes scenic design by Bruce McLeod, costume design by Julie Engelbrecht, lighting design by Andrew Custer, sound design by Laura Mohamed, and properties design by Lori Basuino.

With Claire Slattery of Palo Alto as Ruth; and April Spain of Mountain View as Eileen; the cast includes Alex Barbieri and Beth Boulay of Campbell; Nick Boucher of Cupertino; Ernesto Garcia of East Palo Alto; Justin Heller of Menlo Park; Adam Magill, Nicolae Muntean and Juan Rizziolli of Palo Alto; Lori Ann Grass of Portola Valley; Doug Brees and Anna Rubchinskaya of Redwood City; AJ Jaffari, Steve Lambert and Annette Stenger of San Jose; Irma Durmisevic and Clifford Samoranos of Santa Clara; Brian Van Winkle of South San Francisco; Travis Bilenski of Sunnyvale; and Nathan Doughty of Woodside.

In addition to watching director Frederick's interpretation of the play, audiences can view several of her art pieces selected from the many shows for which she was the designer, including two large San Jose Repertory Company productions, a Marriott's Great America show, and a musical designed for Foothill College. Frederick's work will be exhibited in the Lohman Theatre gallery Nov. 6–22. A part-time theatre arts instructor at Foothill College for more than 25 years and director at professional theatre companies in the area, Frederick has won two Los Angeles Dramalogue Critics Circle Awards for her designs. In 1989, she was named Innovator of the Year by the national League for Innovation in the Community College for developing and serving as executive director of the Performing Arts Alliance Festival at Foothill. In 1984, she received a commendation for her contribution to the arts from the City of San Jose. She is also the founding artistic director of Bus Barn Stage Company in Los Altos, and last season she directed a major production for San Jose City Lights Theater.

Foothill Salutes Veterans

Nov. 11 Lecture Examines Extreme Environments on Earth & Search for Life in the Universe

As part of the 11th annual Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series, Lynn Rothschild, Ph.D., of the NASA Ames Research Center, will discuss Life at The Edge: Life in Extreme Environments on Earth & the Search for Life in the Universe, an illustrated, non-technical lecture, Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College. This talk is part of the local events celebrating the International Year of Astronomy in 2009. Admission is free and the public is invited. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Dr. Rothschild has gone from the Bolivian Andes to the Rift Valley of Kenya searching for the hardiest of organisms in the most extreme environments for life. By getting to know life forms on Earth that can occupy the most hostile niches, we can begin to understand the survival requirements for life in general. She will describe her quest for "life at the edge" and how such discoveries shape our search for life in the Solar System and beyond. An astrobiologist, she specializes in evolutionary microbiology and the use of molecular and cellular techniques to understand DNA damage and photosynthesis in nature. As a consulting professor at Stanford University, she teaches the popular Astrobiology & Space Exploration course.

November Holiday Observances

In observance of the Veterans Day holiday, the Foothill campus is closed Friday, Nov. 13. Classes do not meet on this day. Also, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, the Foothill campus is closed Nov. 26–27 and weekend classes do not meet Nov. 28–29.

Bookstore Annual Food Drive & Open House

The Foothill Bookstore invites you to its annual open house Wednesday, Nov. 18, from noon to 4 p.m. The event will feature light refreshments. The bookstore's Apple Computer Genius Bar will also be open from noon to 1 p.m. for product demonstrations and questions. Admission is free, and the donation of non-perishable food items is requested. Food donations will be given to local charities that provide care to those in need.

Foothill College Theatre Arts Partners with Peninsula Youth Theatre to Stage Alice in Wonderland

The Foothill College Theatre Arts Department and Peninsula Youth Theatre (PYT) fall down the rabbit hole together for a collaborative production of Alice in Wonderland, which plays Dec. 3 through Dec. 6 in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College. Performances are Dec. 3–4 at 10:15 a.m. (student matinee performances); Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.; and Dec. 6 at 2 p.m.

Adapted from Lewis Carroll by William Glennon, one of English literature's most beloved and bizarre tales is brought vividly to the stage as an adventurous and relentless little girl makes a fateful decision to follow the White Rabbit down its hole and into a wonderfully strange land—indeed a Wonderland—filled with mad tea parties, a cat that always grins, an impatient queen with some odd notions of how to play croquet and much more. Limited to just five performances, the Foothill/PYT production is directed by Foothill College Theatre Arts Instructor Tom Gough.

Fall Quarter Final Exams

Final examinations will be given Dec. 8–11. Finals are given in all courses except physical education activity, CNSL 50, Cooperative Education and tutoring courses. Final examinations normally will not be given in advance of the scheduled time. Review the final exam schedule . You are responsible for taking all assigned final examinations. Failure to take the final exam will result in an F grade. If you miss a final exam for a legitimate reason, you should immediately communicate with your instructors and counselor.

Order the Popular Remembering World War II: First-Person Accounts Video Presentation on DVD

Foothill College is taking advance orders for the new DVD of Remembering World War II: First-Person Accounts, a video featuring 42 individual oral history narratives of all sides of the conflict. The three-hour DVD features wartime memorabilia, photographs, letters, documents and music from the period. The project began nine years ago as part of the Foothill College Life Stories class in which writing instructor Sheila Dunec encouraged her older adult students to commit their significant life memories and milestones to paper. Many of the students, themselves members of the Greatest Generation, wrote memoirs of their experiences related to the war. From GIs to WACs and Rosie Riveters to POWs, the life stories complied by Dunec's students told an eye-opening, first-person history of the WWII. The remarkable personal experiences also reflect the diversity of Life Stories students, and inclu de accounts from different countries, cultures and ethnic perspectives, as well as from several sides of the conflict. They include stories from the different theaters of war, front lines, home front, death camps and internment camps. They are told by soldiers, war brides, support personnel, sisters, nurses, Holocaust survivors, prisoners of war and children—all now in their senior years. Foothill students now have free access to Student Health 101 , an online magazine that promotes better health for college students. The monthly magazine covers topics such as diet and nutrition, depression, anxiety and fatigue, alcohol and drug abuse and addictions, healthy sexual practices, and protecting yourself from cold, flu and contagious diseases. The publication also includes events held by the Foothill Health Services Office , including free, rapid HIV testing, Planned Parenthood services, H1N1 vaccine and more. Foothill Music Technology Instructor Nominated For Grammy Award

Foothill Music Technology Instructor Bruce Tambling has been nominated for a 2009 Grammy Award as producer of the year, non-classical. The album, Seek to Follow, features singer Nancy McGinnis , and also includes members of Foothill's Jazz Ensemble with director John Gove . Voting members of the Grammy Academy selected Tambling's work based on overall production quality and diverse musical arrangements. There are very few colleges and universities of any type that have a Grammy-nominated producer among their faculty. The 52nd Grammy Awards will be presented Jan. 31, and will air live on CBS.
