Free, On-Campus Student Orientation to Etudes

Students who are enrolling in Foothill online courses for the first time are encouraged to attend one of three on-campus sessions of the Student Orientation to Etudes during the first week of the Fall Quarter. Admission is free and you do not need to register for the information session. All sessions will meet in the Krause Center for Innovation (KCI) at Foothill College. Attend the session that best suits your schedule:

Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 3 to 5 p.m.;
Wednesday, Sept. 22, from noon to 2 p.m.; or
Thursday, Sept. 23, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Topics covered in the first hour include:
  • what is Etudes?
  • computer and Web browser requirements
  • how to log in and set up
  • navigating the course website
  • Foothill College details (SSN, CWID, PIN and e-mail address)
  • getting help.
The workshop's second hour with cover how-tos for viewing lectures, completing assignments, participating in class discussions, and taking tests and quizzes. Parking Lot 4 provides easy access to the KCI. A campus parking permit is required at all times. Purchase permit for $2 from dispensers in any student lot.

Register Now for Fall Quarter; Classes Filling Quickly

Foothill College can help you earn a specialized certificate, associate degree or upgrade your current job skills. We can also help you complete the general education course requirements you need to transfer to a four-year university.

Registration is ongoing through Sept. 19. Fall Quarter classes begin the week of Sept. 20 and continue through Dec. 10, unless otherwise listed in the class schedule. Anything Goes: Foothill Music Theatre Delivers High Jinks & High Romance on the High Seas
An uproarious musical comedy that features the toe-tapping tunes of Cole Porter, Anything Goes tells the story of the madcap antics aboard an ocean liner bound from New York to London. The show spotlights Cole Porter's "deloveliest" hits, including Friendship, I Get a Kick Out of You, All Through the Night, Blow, Gabriel, Blow, You're the Top, It's Delovely and Anything Goes. Award-winning director Jay Manley helms the seafaring shenanigans with musical direction by Catherine Snider and choreography by Dottie Lester-White. FMT's production of Anything Goes runs through Aug. 15 in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College. Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m.; Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets are $26, general; $24, seniors (age 65 and over); $18, students; $10, children under age 10 (parental advisory: This show includes mild sexual content which some parents may fi nd inappropriate for children). New Student & Parent Orientations
Foothill's New Student Orientation is Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College. The event gives first-time freshmen the opportunity to meet fellow students as well as Foothill faculty and staff, tour campus facilities, and hear a welcome message from college leaders. Parents can receive an orientation to Foothill, too. Set for Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Room 1501, Parent Orientation features strategies to help your college student succeed, student rights and responsibilities, Foothill programs and support services, and financial aid and scholarship information. Auditions for The Winter's Tale
The Foothill College Theatre Arts Department announces auditions for its fall production of The Winter's Tale. Auditions are Sept. 21–22 at 7 p.m. in the Lohman Theatre (Room 8002) at Foothill College. Performers need only attend one audition session and should be prepared to stay for up to three hours. All roles are open and actors of all backgrounds are encouraged to audition. Roles are available for 14 men, six women and one boy. Cold readings from the script will be assigned and performers should prepare a Shakespearean monologue of up to two minutes. Callbacks are Saturday, Sept. 25, at 11 a.m., and rehearsal begins Sept. 28. The show runs Nov. 5–21. Foothill College Theatre Arts Instructor Marcia Frederick will direct Foothill's production of The Winter's Tale. This is a non-equity perfor mance and offers no pay. Parking Lots 1, 7 and 8 provide access to the theatre. Purchase a parking permit for $2 from dispensers in parking lot. The Way You Register for Foothill Classes Has Changed

Beginning with Summer Session, Foothill College students will register classes using the new MyPortal.fhda.edu system. MyPortal.fhda.edu is your new secure online gateway to important Foothill services, such as registering for classes, checking grades, paying fees, receiving important updates from the college, and much more.

To access the new system, click the MyPortal.fhda.edu login link on www.foothill.edu. Then enter your eight-digit Student ID (also known as your Campuswide ID) and your six-digit temporary password, which is your date of birth in this format: MMDDYY. Logon to the portal now to be certain your password works and eliminate any holds that would prevent you from registering. Memorize your Student ID and the new password that you will create the first time you log in, and do not share this information. Learn more about registration.

If you logon to MyPortal.fhda.edu and encounter problems with your account, you'll need to reset your password. You can do so by going here: https://myportal.fhda.edu/LuminisSecurityServices/. If you still have difficulty logging in, you'll need to fill out the simple problem report online form, which you can access here: https://myportal.fhda.edu/LuminisSupport/forms/requesthelp.html. We'll respond back promptly with a solution to the problem.

Theatre Arts New Works Festival On Stage Now

The Foothill College Theatre Conservatory presents its annual New Works Festival June 17–20 in the Lohman Theatre at Foothill College. Produced by Theatre Arts Instructor Tracy Ward, the festival spotlights 12 world premieres from the Foothill College Playwriting Program presented as staged, script-in-hand readings. This year, the festival's offerings showcase a variety of themes, from addiction and adoption to religion and the origin the universe. Tickets are available at the door beginning 30 minutes before show time. A donation of $5–$15 is suggested. Visitors must purchase a required campus parking permit for $2 from yellow dispensers in student parking lots. Lots 7 and 8 provide convenient access to the Lohman Theatre. Textbook Buyback at Foothill Bookstore June 21–25

The Foothill College Bookstore will conduct textbook buyback June 21–25 in front of the bookstore. Buyback hours at the Main Campus are Monday through Thursday, June 21–24, 9 a.m.–7 p.m.; and Friday, June 25, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Buyback hours at the Middlefield Campus are Monday through Thursday, June 21–24, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Learn more about textbook buyback.

The Foothill College Bookstore makes every effort to get you the highest possible price for your used books. Buyback operates on a first-come, first-served basis so arrive early to get the best price for your textbooks. The quantity of textbooks that will be bought back by the Foothill College Bookstore is limited and may be reached at any time. The price paid back during buyback is subject to change without notice.

Textbook condition is critical to buyback value. Books that are wet or have previously been wet will not be bought back. Workbooks, study guides, lab manuals, spiral-bound books, books with tear-out pages, books with excessive writing or highlighting, books with missing CDs, missing or badly damaged covers, broken spines or missing pages are generally not bought back. The Foothill College Bookstore reserves the right to determine the quality of each book to determine if the book is in re-sellable condition and reserves the right to refuse the purchase of any book based on condition.


50th Annual Commencement Ceremony Is June 25

Foothill College presents its 50th Annual Commencement Ceremony Friday, June 25, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Library Quad. The evening will feature inspirational messages from Foothill College President Judy C. Miner, student speaker Andreas Santucci, faculty speaker Glenn Violett and keynote speaker U.S. Secretary of State Arne Duncan. U.S. Secretary of Education to Speak at Commencement

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will deliver the keynote addresses at June commencement ceremonies for both Foothill College and De Anza College. Duncan will make his remarks at Foothill's 50th annual ceremony Friday, June 25, at 6 p.m. in the Library Quad, and at De Anza's 43rd annual ceremony Saturday, June 26, at 9 a.m. in the Outdoor Events Arena. "We are thrilled and honored to have Secretary Duncan speak to our students and celebrate this important milestone in their lives," says Linda M. Thor, Ed.D., chancellor of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District. "We deeply appreciate the work he has done to communicate the critical role of community colleges in increasing educational attainment in our country, and his efforts, alongside the president, to ensure that community colleges have adequate resources to do that important work."

Duncan joined President Barack Obama's administration as secretary of education in January 2009 following seven years as chief executive officer of the Chicago Public Schools, where his mandate was to raise educational standards and performance; improve teacher and principal quality; and increase learning options. During his tenure in Chicago, reading and math scores of the district's elementary school students reached record highs and the number of teachers achieving National Board Certification soared. From 1987 to 1991, Duncan played professional basketball in Australia, where he also worked with children who were wards of the state. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1987, majoring in sociology. He was co-captain of Harvard's basketball team and credits basketball for his team-oriented and disciplined work ethic.

Foothill art student Amaury Hernandez presents My Soul, a mixed media exhibit, through June 30 in the Lohman Theatre Gallery at Foothill. Admission is free.


Foothill Students Exhibit at PhotoCentral

Foothill students add their innovation and expressive artwork to the Revival of 19th Century Photography exhibit on display through Aug. 31 at the PhotoCentral Gallery in Hayward. This exhibition includes a variety of traditional photographic processes, including cyanotype, van dyke brown, platinum/paladium, carbon and gum printing. In addition to works by student enrolled in Foothill's PHOT 13: Experimental Photography course, the exhibit features new works by artists Brian Taylor, of San Jose State University, and Vaughn Hutchins, of CSU Humboldt. The show is curated by Foothill Photography Instructor Kate Jordahl and PhotoCentral Director Geir Jordahl.


New Foothill Student Trustee Elected

Last month, student Etienne "E.T." Bowie was elected by fellow students to serve as the Foothill College Student Trustee to the Foothill-De Anza Community College District Board of Trustees through May 2011. Bowie's student trustee counterpart from De Anza College is Thomasina Russaw.

Kenny began programming in GW-BASIC on his family's Tandy 1000 when he was 9 years old. More recently, he wrote the Pathways interactive directory software in C# 2.0 with a SQL Server 2005 Express back end. Kenny went to school at CSU, Chico. Kenny's programming experience includes: C#, SQL, XML, Application Design, Server Administration.
