Winter Quarter Registration

Winter Quarter online and phone registration for continuing students runs Dec. 3 through Jan. 6. Online and telephone registration for new and former students is Dec. 10 through Jan. 6. Unless otherwise noted in the schedule, Winter Quarter courses run Jan. 7 through March 28.

Campus Offices Relocating, Some Services Will Be Limited

Several student services offices are relocating to the new Lower Campus Complex this month. To accommodate the move of personnel and equipment, some of these offices will be open for limited service on select dates.
  • The Admissions & Records Office will move to Room 8101 in Building 8200. Limited services will be available in Room 1927 through Nov. 9. The office will open in its new location Nov. 13 at 2 p.m.
  • The Financial Aid Office will move to Building 8200. Limited service will be available Nov. 16. The office will be closed Nov. 19-23.
  • The Counseling Division, Career Center and Transfer Center will move to Building 8000. Counselors and staff will move Nov. 13-16. Counseling appointments will not be available Nov. 15-16. The office will open in its new location Nov. 19
Foothill Music Instructor’s Band Advances to KFOX Last Band Standing Competition

The Megatones, a local band featuring Foothill Music Instructor Mike Sult on lead guitar, has been named a finalist in the Last Band Standing Contest sponsored by KFOX 98.5. Visit the show’s Web site to listen to and vote for The Megatones.

The Work of Gene D. Mason: Color Work Exhibit on Display

Foothill’s Photography & Digital Imaging Gallery (Room 6104) is showing The Work of Gene D. Mason: Color Work now through Nov. 30. Admission is free. Mason’s Foothill Deconstructed is a photographic study in line, shape and form seen in the examination of structural details observed during Foothill’s ongoing construction process.

24 Hours in North Beach: A Photographic Exploration Gallery Exhibit

The 24 Hours in North Beach: A Photographic Exploration gallery exhibit is on display through Nov. 30 in the Krause Center for Innovation at Foothill College. The concept was simple: Offer the Foothill College photography community an extraordinary opportunity of collaboration, learning and creativity by photographing 24 consecutive hours of life in the active, historic and artistic neighborhood of North Beach in San Francisco. Student and faculty photographers used film and digital in small, medium and large formats, and in black and white and color to capture the visual poetry of colors, people and architecture. Foothill-De Anza Seeks Residents to Serve on Oversight Committee

The Foothill-De Anza Community College District (FHDA) Board of Trustees is seeking applicants who live within the district for four seats on its Measure C Citizens Bond Oversight Committee. The deadline for completed applications is Friday, Nov. 9, at 5 p.m. FHDA’s Measure C, a $490.8 million general obligation bond measure, was approved by 65.69 percent of the voters on June 6, 2006. New Horizons at Jupiter…and Some Saturn News

As part of the ninth annual Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series, Dr. Jeff Moore of NASA Ames will present Ice Volcanoes of Enceladus & New Horizon Flyby of Jupiter, an illustrated, non-technical talk, Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College. Admission is free and the public is invited. The free lecture series is sponsored by the Foothill College Astronomy Program, NASA Ames Research Center, SETI Institute and Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Foothill International Film Festival

As part of International Education Week, Foothill College presents its annual International Film Festival Nov. 13-16. All films include English subtitles and screen at 5:30 p.m. in Appreciation Hall (Room 1501). Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. Complimentary refreshments will be served in the patio adjacent to Appreciation Hall at 5 p.m.

The films included in the festival include I Cento Passi (Italy) on Tuesday, Nov. 13; Im Juli (Germany) and The Rebel (Vietnam) on Wednesday, Nov. 14; Magnifico (Philippines) on Thursday, Nov. 15; and Walk on Water (Israel) on Friday, Nov. 16.

Foothill Actors Bring The Jungle Book to Life

Students enrolled in the intensive Foothill Theatre Conservatory Program will bring Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book to life for Bay Area kids and their families Nov. 15-18 in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College. Morning performances are Nov. 15 and 16 at 10:30 a.m. Afternoon shows are Nov. 17 and 18 at 2 p.m. One evening performance will be staged Nov. 18 at 5 p.m.

Foothill 50th Anniversary Dance Party Concert

Under the direction of Foothill Dance Instructor Bubba Gong, the award-winning Foothill Repertory Dance Company presents Dance Party, its winter concert, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre. With a cast of more than 100 dancers and guest artists, the show will feature a diversity of dance from Pavarotti to the Pussy Cat Dolls. The family friendly production includes a variety of dance forms such as ballet, hip hop, tap, modern, lyrical, ballroom, contemporary, jazz, world dance, Latin, spoken word and flag corps. A Tale of Two Symphonies Concert

The Silicon Valley Symphony presents A Tale of Two Symphonies Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos. The performance will include Brahms Symphony No. 1 in C minor and Saint-SaÎns Symphony No. 3 in C minor Organ Symphony. Study in Italy This Spring

Spend spring in Florence as you study Italian life and culture with Foothill-De Anza faculty. Nova Vista Symphony Offers Family Concert Dec. 8

Nova Vista Symphony presents Charmers, Jokesters & Comedians, its winter concert, Dec. 8 at 3 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill. Violinist David Southorn, winner of the 2006-2007 Nova Vista Symphony and Fremont Symphony Young Artist competitions, will perform the third movement of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. The afternoon timing and program of six light pieces, including familiar melodies, will make the concert especially appealing to families. The program includes music by Rimsky-Korsakov, Piston, Saint-Saens and Sousa as well as Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. Tickets are available at www.novavista.org and at the door.

Final Exams Are Dec. 11-14

Final examinations are given in all courses except physical education activity, CNSL 50, cooperative education and tutoring courses. Final examinations normally will not be given in advance of the scheduled time. You are responsible for taking all assigned final exams. Failure to take the final exam will result in an F grade. If you miss a final exam for a legitimate reason, you should immediately communicate with your instructors and counselor. Review the final exam schedule.

OLA Hosts Book Drive for Incarcerated Women

Foothill’s Organizacion Latinos Americana (OLA) has teamed up with the Santa Clara County Commission on the Status of Women for a holiday book drive to collect easy-to-read material for women who are lodged at Elmwood Jail. Now through Dec. 14, you can bring new and almost new paperback books—from how-to and self-help books to novels and non-fiction—to on-campus drop-off locations in the Student Success Center, Cooperative Work Experience Program Office, Counseling Lobby, Student Activities Office and FHDA District Office. Apply Early for Scholarships

Foothill offers numerous scholarships for students of all majors and interests. You can use scholarship money to pay for books, computer gear and even to offset living expenses. The key to receiving a scholarship is reviewing each award’s criteria and submitting the required essay and related forms well before the Feb. 14 deadline. Review Foothill’s scholarship listings.

This is an excellent time to begin researching scholarships, downloading application materials, writing your essay and requesting letters of recommendation. Scholarships will be awarded during Spring Quarter.

Of particular note for scholarship hunters is the Foothill College Commission Scholarship, which will award two students with $1,500 each. To apply for this award, you must be preparing to transfer and have completed a minimum of 45 transferable quarter units with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Community service to Foothill College and/or the community served by the college should be emphasized in your essay. Your volunteer experience will play a major role in the final selection process. Pick up the application for this scholarship in person in the Financial Aid Office.

Planning to Transfer to UC Santa Cruz?

If you’re planning to transfer to UC Santa Cruz, you’ll want to learn more about the Karl S. Pister Leadership Opportunity Award and its $20,000 scholarship. The application form is available now in the Financial Aid Office. The deadline to submit application materials for this award is Feb. 1.
